Head of Early Products Commercial Strategy and New Business Development
Location: United Kingdom (from mid‑2026 the offices in Wokingham and High Wycombe will move into a new office in central Maidenhead)
Role Purpose
* Commercially lead and deliver UK Early Product Portfolio strategy, recommending launch priorities and working closely with HEMAR Market Access, Medical and other functions to input to EMEA and global launch planning.
* Lead on prioritised key brands and co‑promotes where not yet in UK Brand teams; search for local UK licence & co‑promotion opportunities to fulfil local needs.
* New Business Development activities, including evaluation of licensing, mergers, acquisitions, co‑promotion and commercial opportunities across therapeutic areas, and recommending go/no‑go decisions to Managing Director, Business Unit Director and Leadership Team.
* Collaborate with EMEA NBD on regional and global NBD projects as required.
Key Role Activities
New Business Development
* Identify gaps and opportunities in portfolio and commercial prospects at local UK level.
* Identify interest for the UK in regional/global deals by holding strategic discussions with UK Leadership Team stakeholders.
* Lead and/or support full regional commercial evaluations of global acquisition or licensing deals as required by EMEA NBD team.
* Lead all activities necessary for full commercial evaluations of local UK opportunities in a variety of therapy areas, including:
o Complete standard business analysis on product opportunity.
o Commission market research to validate key forecast assumptions.
o Consolidate inputs (IMS sales data, promotional data, forecast assumptions, pricing estimates, health economics, strategic rationale, etc.).
o Define current and future standard of care for specific therapy class to generate Target Product Profile (TPP).
o Lead UK colleagues through commercial assessment of opportunities during due diligence.
o Work with forecasting partners and UK finance managers to develop a robust forecast and complete a full risk‑adjusted P&L/NPV calculation.
o Work with legal department to identify IP status.
o Give commercial input to finance and legal for drafting deal terms.
* Work with functional representatives (Medical, Marketing, Regulatory, HEMAR, Legal, etc.) to answer all open questions in evaluating new opportunities.
* Finalize local business cases for new opportunities based on analysis of all available data.
* Recommend a particular course of action to senior management, including potential risk assessment.
* Proactively network with regional NBD counterparts.
Early Products
* UK commercial lead on early product portfolio, working closely with HEMAR, Medical and other functions to input to EMEA and global launch planning and early UK launch planning.
* Lead UK commercial input to the EMEA strategic brand teams on strategic planning for products not yet assigned to a UK brand team.
* Coordinate UK insights and requirements on the early product portfolio with HEMAR and Medical early product leads and other functions.
* Contribute to long‑range financial planning forecasts and new product life cycle forecasts for early products.
* Provide UK Leadership Team with an overview of the future portfolio and assess strategic and operational implications.
* Act as CVTL on allocated key brands and co‑promotes where not yet in UK Brand teams, including launch planning, sales forecasting, OPEX, salesforce sizing.
* Ensure processes and oversight of the Early Products Portfolio for the UK company are clear and well organised.
Key Compliance Requirements - Applicable To All Roles
* Ensure safety reporting requirements (timely AE/PQC reporting) are met.
* Ensure HCC and legal requirements (Fair Market Value, Transfer of Value rules, Promotional Materials rules) are fully understood and complied with.
* Ensure inspection readiness with respect to personal training compliance and recent CV and individualized Job Description.
* If commissioning contractors or third‑party organisations, put contracts in place and provide training to act in accordance with J&J HCC requirements.
Role Dimensions
Communication With Others Outside J&J Innovative Medicine
* Business Development executives from companies for prospective deals (UK biotech and pharmaceutical organisations).
* Market Research Agencies.
* Business Development consultants and strategic consultancies.
* Co‑promote partners.
Communication With Others Within J&J Innovative Medicine
* Regular strategic discussions with UK MD, Business Unit Directors, Medical Director, Regulatory team, HEMAR, Government Affairs and Policy, Finance Director, Commercial Leads, and Business Insights.
* Collaboration with EMEA NBD team and EMEA strategic brand teams (IBVTs) and Early Products & Opportunities Strategy Team (EPOSTs).
* Ad hoc presentations to Senior management at regional or global level.
Resource Management
* Responsible for UK Early Products cross‑functional budget.
Qualifications
* Bachelor’s Degree (e.g., in Business, Life Sciences, Pharmacy, Economics, or a related field); post‑graduate degree preferred.
Essential Technical Knowledge, Skills And Experience
* Knowledge of pharmaceutical/life science licensing, mergers, acquisitions, co‑promotion, and commercial processes.
* Technical understanding of how to conduct commercial evaluations / business plans.
* Understanding of J&J UK strategic objectives.
* Strong commercial acumen and experience.
* Ability to work across a diverse product portfolio but dive deep as needed.
