Milk Education is delighted to recruit a compassionate and skilled Welfare & Pastoral Practitioner to work within a small, specialist secondary provision supporting young people with complex social, emontional and mental health needs. This is an exceptional opportunity to join a highly regarded setting dedicated to holistic support and engagement, based in a vibrant East London community.

About the School

The school is a specialist state funded provision for boys aged 11-18, offering a nurturing environment tailored to SEMH needs. Students have personalised provision and many come to education with challenging histories or barriers to engagement. The setting operates with a trauma-informed philosophy and places a strong emphasis on wellbeing, relationships and personalised pathways to success.

Located in Tower Hamlets, an area known for its rich cultural diversity and fast-paced urban character, the student body includes a high proportion of pupils eligible for free school meals and several for whom English is an additional language, reflecting a wide range of backgrounds and life experiences.

Role Overview

As a Welfare & Pastoral Practitioner, you will be central to promoting wellbeing, attendance and sustained engagement in learning. You will work closely with students, families and staff, developing trusting relationships that enable young people to overcome barriers and thrive both personally and academically.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide targeted welfare support to students with complex SEMH needs.

Build trusted relationships with pupils, parents and carers, including home visits and community outreach where appropriate.

Work collaboratively with teachers, pastoral leaders, external agencies (e.g., health, social care, advocacy services) to ensure cohesive support plans.

Promote positive attendance and engagement strategies, identifying patterns and intervening proactively.

Support transitions and reintegration into school routines with sensitivity and persistence.

Maintain accurate records and contribute to safeguarding, behavioural and engagement monitoring systems.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

Experience working directly with young people facing challenges in wellbeing, attendance or engagement.

A strengths-based approach rooted in empathy, consistency and clear communication.

Strong organisational skills and confidence in multi-agency collaboration.

Knowledge of trauma-informed practice and de-escalation strategies.

An understanding of safeguarding responsibilities and working within statutory frameworks.
