The department is based in the Nottingham Urology Centre at the City Campus of NUH. We provide post-operative care for urology and gynaecology patients. Our unit comprises X recovery bays. Our dedicated team is specialty trained, including post-operative care delivery for level one and two patients, pain management, and wound care. We pride ourselves on delivering quality, individual, patient-focused, personalized care.
Currently, the core hours of the unit are Monday - Friday 7:00 am to 7:30 pm, but some late shift working will be required. Working hours are currently under review as we work to reduce waiting times for our patients.
Main duties of the job
This is a busy unit, receiving patients on the day of their admission for surgery. The department provides surgical services for both Urology and elective Gynaecology. You will be required to admit patients to the department, including using NerveCentre to complete the admission process. Venepuncture and ECG skills may be required during admission. You will provide immediate post-operative recovery, including pain management, medication administration, and care for patients undergoing chemotherapy.
Skills such as cannulation, IV medicines, care of epidurals and PCA infusions, as well as mentoring students, are advantageous and required in your role. You will also manage patient discharges, both to wards and directly home, arranging district nurse referrals and outpatient appointments.
About us
The Recovery Practitioner role is varied, managing post-operative care for diverse patient groups. You must demonstrate the ability to manage acutely ill patients, including PCA and epidurals. Previous recovery or critical care experience is desirable but not essential, as a comprehensive induction will support the successful candidate.
The Recovery Practitioners also admit patients arriving on the day of surgery and discharge some post-surgery. Experience with admission/discharge procedures and systems like Nervecentre and MedwayPAS would be an advantage.
