Job Overview
We have an exciting opportunity to join our Play Team at GOSH as a Play Worker. You will support fellow Play Team members across the hospital, using your knowledge of play and child development to provide normalising play opportunities and promote a positive patient experience.
The role enhances children and young people's hospital experiences through creative play, family support, and providing a safe environment. You will work flexibly with other Play Workers and Healthcare Play Specialists.
Main Duties
* Organise and facilitate play opportunities for individuals and groups of children and young people.
* Plan for uncertainty, adapting play sessions to meet the child's needs, and seek guidance when necessary.
* Assist in creating a caring and safe play environment.
* Encourage parents and siblings to engage in play with their child.
* Provide independence and wellbeing activities.
* Offer opportunities for parents and patients to spend time independently.
* Maintain toy cleaning and infection control.
* Communicate effectively with children, families, and the multidisciplinary team.
* Maintain activity data and refer children who require specialist interventions.
Person Specification
* NVQ, CACHE, NNEB (Level 3) in Child Care/Play Work or Diploma in Children and Young Peoples Workforce.
* Basic Secondary Education, including English and Math's (GCSE Grade A* - C).
* Evidence of ongoing learning and Makaton/other communication method.
Experience and Knowledge
* Knowledge of child development and experience working with children/young people in a play, education, or hospital setting.
* Experience of working as a team member and contributing to an inclusive workplace culture.
* Basic knowledge of confidentiality and documented evidence of Continuing Professional Development.
Skills and Abilities
* Ability to work with and provide creative activities to individual and groups of children/young people.
* Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to understand professional boundaries.
* Good organisation, health, safety, and risk awareness, and documentation and IT skills.
