Job Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen at Sunderland Counselling Service for an energetic individual with 2 years post qualifying experience of working as a counsellor / therapist with children and young people from 5-18 years old. This post will be part time for 4 days a week.
Sunderland Counselling Service Head Office is based in John Street in the city centre and we expect the successful post holder will work from a community base(s) across the Sunderland area.
The post holder will hold a counselling qualification to Degree, MSc, MA, or Diploma level and will work in a Sunderland Community Children and Young People's Mental Health Service (SCCAYPMHS) locality base within Sunderland as part of a team of counsellors. The post holder will be engaged in the delivery and development of the counselling, supervision and training components of the service, and will work with children and young people whose lives are, or have been, affected by events that impact their emotional and mental well‑being.
Main duties of the role
 * Assess the needs of children and young people in relation to their emotional and mental well‑being, offering counselling to help them address these issues.
 * Participate in team development, training, regular supervision sessions, attend team meetings and contribute to the further development and sustainability of the service.
 * Maintain accountability for personal conduct and professional practice in line with relevant legislation and SCCAYPMHS policies and procedures.
 * Keep accurate and appropriate records of the work carried out, including contributing to statistical information using relevant outcome measures.
 * Be willing to undertake some evening and weekend work and any other duties as required within the spirit of the post.

You will be line managed through Sunderland Counselling Service, an independent local charity with over 30 years in the sector, and work as part of an integrated SCCAYPMHS team.
Contract & Remuneration
Contract: Permanent, part‑time 0.8 FTE (30 hours a week). Annual leave: 30 days pro‑rata. Salary: £31,049 to £40,823 per annum, pro‑rata based on qualifications:
 * £31,049 per annum – for qualified counsellors.
 * £38,682 per annum – for those with BACP (or equivalent) accreditation.
 * £40,823 per annum – for those with recognised Clinical Supervision qualification and BACP (or equivalent) accreditation.

Person Specification
Knowledge and Skills – Essential
 * Sound knowledge of the legislative frameworks in relation to mental health and child protection.
 * Ability to engage and work with children and young people individually and in groups.
 * Ability to make good use of the supervisory process.
 * Commitment to working with multi‑agency partnerships.
 * Good information technology skills.
 * Full driving licence.
Knowledge and Skills – Desirable
 * Sound knowledge of children and young people’s mental health issues.
 * Familiarity with child and family support agencies.
 * Knowledge of child attachment and development.
 * Experience of working in a school or educational setting.
 * Experience of providing counselling supervision.
Qualifications – Essential
 * Qualified to Degree, MSc, MA, or Diploma level in Counselling.
 * Recognition of a qualification in working therapeutically with children and young people.
Qualifications – Desirable
 * General education to A Level standard or equivalent.
 * Counselling supervision qualification or eligibility and willingness to work towards the same.
Experience – Essential
 * Minimum of two years experience of working with children and young people in a counselling setting.
 * Willingness to contribute to development of strategies for accessible service provision.
 * Registration with BACP or other relevant professional body.
Experience – Desirable
 * Evidence of working towards BACP accreditation or equivalent.
 * Experience working in a school or educational setting.
 * Experience with multi‑agency partnerships.
 * Experience providing counselling supervision.

The post requires a DBS check. Submission for a DBS is required as per the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act.
