Since opening in 2004, the SWLEOC has earned a reputation as a centre of excellence for elective orthopaedic surgery with excellent outcomes, low complications, and high patient satisfaction. Performing approximately 6 000 procedures a year, of which 3 000 are joint replacements, the SWLEOC is recognised as one of the largest joint replacement centres in the UK as well as one of the largest shoulder surgery centres. Other sub‑specialities include soft tissue, spine, foot, ankle and hand procedures. The SWLEOC runs a dedicated Research Outcomes programme and takes an active role in research including Orthopaedic Data Evaluation Panel (ODEP) studies as recommended by NICE. The centre has a strong focus on Education across the multi‑professional team.

About Us

SWLEOC has a total of 50 highly skilled orthopaedic surgeons, of which 43 are visiting from partner trusts. Their work, in collaboration with that of the SWLEOC's multidisciplinary team, ensures a gathering of wisdom and experience that allows the SWLEOC to face significant levels of complexity and clinical challenge. The SWLEOC provides a clinical pathway of care that is nurse and Consultant led; Specialist Registrars will attend surgery for training but there are no House Officer/Senior House Officers within the Centre, their role being undertaken by the nursing teams. St George's, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals and Health Group cares for a population of four million people in South West London and North East Surrey. Our sites include St George's Hospital, one of 11 major trauma centres in the UK and the largest healthcare provider and teaching hospital in the area; St Helier Hospital, home to the South West Thames Renal and Transplantation Unit and Queen Mary's Hospital for Children; and Epsom Hospital, home to the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC). After years of collaboration, our two Trusts became a hospitals group in 2021. While remaining as two separate Trusts, being a hospitals group will help us to collaborate more closely on research, and the development, education, and training of our 17,000‑strong workforce.
