The Biodiversity Information Office (BIO) has been created as a collaborative unit, funded by jointly by the State and Commonwealth Governments, to enable innovative development and delivery of systems to capture, curate and report biodiversity data.
We currently have an opportunity for a Senior Data Engineer to join our team.
This position leads the development, optimise and ongoing support of biodiversity data engineering and analytics across the data lifecycle, including data ingestion, data quality assurance, application of data standards, data storage and delivery. Collaborating with a dynamic team of software engineers, science officers and system architect, they will support and optimise data pipelines and processes delivering the technical requirements to meet the business objectives of the Biodiversity Information Office and the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions.

Selection Criteria
Applicants should address the following six (6) criteria. These should be addressed in no more than three (3) pages in total.
1. Substantial demonstrated understanding of, and experience in, (Level 6) or extensive demonstrated knowledge of, and experience in (Level 7) in contemporary science and/or geospatial data engineering and the management of data across multiple stages of the data life cycle, including data ingestion, transformation, quality assurance, storage and data delivery.
2. Excellent technical skills and problem-solving ability relating to the management of data quality and the design and development data workflows and pipelines.
3. Substantial (Level 6) or extensive (Level 7) demonstrated ability to lead small technical teams, supervise and mentor direct reports to ensure delivery of business outcomes.
4. Demonstrated ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team to deliver science data management outcomes and drive continuous improvements to business processes.
5. Evidence of high level strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills and negotiation skills (well developed Level 6 or highly developed Level 7) with a demonstrated ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with a broad range of stakeholders.
6. Demonstrated experience (Substantial Level 6 or Extensive Level 7) in at least one of the following coding and programming languages ( Python, R, SQL); And demonstrated experience (Substantial Level 6 or Extensive Level 7) in development and maintenance of data storage platforms. ( PostgresSQL DB, NoSQL Databases, MongoDB, graph databases); and public cloud platforms ( AWS, Azure); and agile development tools ( DevOps, Jira or similar).
