Job Title: Occupational Health Advisor – This is a temp to perm position which is home working with bi monthly visits to the OH Unit for health surveillance clinics plus additional in person visits for training and team meetings.

OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
The overall purpose of the role is to provide Specialist Occupational Health Advice to Thames Valley Police, by establishing Police Officers, Specials, Police Staff and Volunteers fitness for work. Promote health, safety and wellbeing to all members of staff.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITY AREAS
 1. Provide an appropriate Occupational Health Advisory service to all Thames Valley staff for management referrals – triaging referrals to determine clinical need and most suitable type of appointment. Provide advice and guidance in relation to fitness for role in line with relevant employment legislation (e.g. Equality Act 2010, H&S Regulations); this may include attending meetings with the individual, their line management and Employment Relations.
 2. Conduct health assessments of Staff and Officers in line with Limited Duties Guidelines. Provide advice and guidance in relation to fitness and adjustment to role. Attend the Adjusted Duties Categorisation Meetings and provide advice based on clinical opinion.
 3. Provide advice and conduct health screening and health surveillance of Police Officers and Police Staff to ensure medical standards criteria is met in relation to recruitment, and specialised job role requirements.
 4. Administer vaccines as required in conjunction with the health requirements and appropriate written instruction guidelines. Take blood samples as and when required.
 5. Provide a consultancy service to the Force in relation to medical issues, advice on infectious diseases and health education/promotion at all levels within the organisation at regular intervals across the Force.
 6. Take an active role to assist with the delivery and development of policy and procedures in respect of Occupational Health, Wellbeing and National Police Wellbeing Service standards.
 7. Maintain continuous professional development in line with NMC revalidation.

Further Comments:
The post holder will be working in a multi-disciplinary team including Occupational health Doctors, Occupational Health Nurses, Registered Mental Health Nurses, Technicians, Welfare Officers and Administrative team.
The department is responsible for providing advice to line managers and individuals which includes OHU Management Referrals, Health Screening & Surveillance via a range of methods i.e. face to face, telephone and video consultations.
The post holder would need to consider financial impact in order to make a decision regarding treatment programmes (e.g. physio, private medical treatment).
The nature of the role has to have considerable autonomy to act independently due to the confidentiality. There should be a strong level of trust between the post holder and the Senior Occupational Health Advisor to ensure that risks to the organisation are highlighted.
The post holder may need to deliver advice which is not always as expected by the individual and/or their line manager e.g. advising an officer that they need to be considered as adjusted or that they need to be referred for ill health retirement.
The post holder will often deal with individuals displaying a whole range of emotions due to their specific health issues and circumstances.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ROLE
Expertise: Concerned with the level of administrative, professional and/or technical expertise (knowledge and skills) needed to perform the role effectively; may be acquired through experience, specialised training, and/or professional or specialist education and training.
The knowledge or skills required in the role are as follows (essential or desirable): E/D
 1. Registered General Nurse (RGN) with Diploma/Degree in Occupational Health Nursing. E
 2. Recent experience within an Occupational Health environment with proven emotional and psychological resilience to deal with the demands of this post. E
 3. Proven ability to communicate information effectively, both verbally and in writing. Confident and able to adapt communication style when dealing with both internal and external stakeholders, and at all levels. E
 4. Proven ability to work on own initiative and prioritise with excellent time management skills. E
 5. Proven ability to maintain information in a confidential manner as well as having integrity to ensure any information given is kept confidentially in accordance with the RCN Code of Practice and TVP Code of Ethics. E
 6. Must have capability to travel to different locations across the Force and undertake all assignments in a timely manner. Due to the requirement to work flexibly, unsocial hours and personal safety for lone working; public transport may not be available or suitable at these times. For this reason a full UK driving licence is considered essential. E
 7. Proven knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and a willingness to learn new systems as required. E
 8. Willing to attend and put into practice, safe workforce training and attend briefings. E
 9. Knowledge of Policing policies and procedures. D
