Nursery Nurse

Go back South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust

The closing date is 30 April 2026

The Mother and Baby Unit (MBU) is a 13‑bed acute female ward providing evidence‑based mental health treatment for pregnant women and women with babies under one year old.

Our service supports women with acute or relapsing mental illness such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and affective disorders.

We aim to promote recovery by helping mothers develop confidence in their vital role and ensuring babies grow into healthy, emotionally capable, securely attached individuals who can lead happy lives.

If you are ready to take on a new challenge in your nursery nursing career, this role will let you care for babies while supporting their mothers’ recovery through a wide range of interventions.

We will provide a two‑week induction including a five‑hour online self‑study course – “A brief introduction to perinatal mental health” – and ongoing training in baby massage, baby yoga and breastfeeding.

Main duties

* Deliver interventions that meet the baby’s needs for mothers receiving inpatient care.
* Support the mother and the multidisciplinary team to ensure consistent and appropriate emotional and practical care of the baby at all times.
* Monitor, document and report the developmental progress of babies on the unit, working with families and community nursing teams (midwives, health visitors etc.).
* Ensure regular monitoring of physical health and developmental milestones of babies, and report findings to link health visitors as required.
* Promote mothers’ involvement in the care of their baby and consult them regarding all care provided.
* Organise and facilitate mother‑and‑baby groups to share and educate about all areas of baby care and play.
* Provide written and verbal reports to the multidisciplinary team concerning mothers’ care of and behaviour with their baby and any observed changes in physical health of babies, reporting any concerns immediately to the nurse in charge.
* Communicate sensitive information to patients and/or relatives/carers concerning appropriate physical and/or psychological care and interactions with their baby.
* Attend regular supervision and appraisal, contribute to the well‑being of the team by supporting other team members and treating all colleagues with respect.
* Carry out Promotion of Safe and Therapeutic Services interventions as required in line with Trust policy.
* Undertake any other appropriate duties as may be assigned or delegated by the nurse in charge.
