About the Role
Leverhulme Trust funded full‑time post is available from 1st January 2026 until 31st December 2028 (dates may shift depending on the candidate’s availability). The salary ranges from £34,610 (Grade E) for an Associate to £43,482 (Grade F) for a Fellow, depending on knowledge, skills and experience.
The Faculty of Health and Life Sciences wishes to recruit a Postdoctoral Research Associate or Fellow to study the structural basis of eukaryotic ribosome hibernation in situ. The successful applicant will employ X‑ray tomography, focused ion beam scanning electron microscopy (FIB‑SEM) and cryo‑electron tomography to study and compare ribosome hibernation in mammalian, fungal and plant model systems.
Responsibilities
 * Cell culture
 * Preparation of samples for cryo‑EM via plunge‑ or high‑pressure freezing
 * Processing of samples by FIB‑SEM (both volume EM and FIB‑lamellae)
 * Tomographic data collection
 * Soft X‑ray tomography
 * Tomogram reconstruction and segmentation
 * Sub‑tomogram averaging
 * Atomic model building
Qualifications
Postdoctoral Research Associate: The applicant must be able to present research progress and outcomes, communicate complex information orally, in writing and electronically, and prepare proposals and applications to external bodies. A relevant PhD (or nearing completion) or equivalent qualification/experience in a related field is required, with sufficient knowledge of the discipline and research methods to work within established programmes.
Postdoctoral Research Fellow: The applicant should be able to develop research objectives, projects and proposals, identify funding sources and help secure funds, and present at conferences. A PhD or equivalent qualification is required. The successful candidate should be a nationally recognised authority in the subject area, possess specialist knowledge to develop research programmes and methodologies, and be able to supervise others and act as a team leader as needed. Expertise in cryo‑electron microscopy/tomography, including sample preparation, microscope operation and image processing, is essential; experience in FIB‑SEM is a plus.
