Site Engineer - Highways (Earthworks & Drainage)

About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Freelance Site Engineer to join a major highway project in Gloucester. The role will be heavily focused on earthworks and drainage delivery, supporting the successful completion of a nationally significant scheme.
This is a freelance contract (inside IR35), suited to engineers with proven experience on large-scale highways or infrastructure projects.
Key Responsibilities
Undertake setting out and surveying duties for earthworks, drainage, and associated highway infrastructure works.
Ensure construction works are delivered in line with drawings, specifications, and quality requirements.
Assist in coordinating and supervising subcontractors and direct labour.
Maintain accurate site records including QA checks, ITPs, as-builts, and diaries.
Provide technical support to the site team and resolve engineering issues.
Monitor site HSEQ compliance and promote safe working practices.
Report progress to Section Engineer / Site Manager.
Requirements
Degree or HNC/HND in Civil Engineering (or equivalent).
Previous experience as a Site Engineer on major highways or infrastructure projects.
Strong technical knowledge of earthworks and drainage construction.
Proficient with surveying equipment (Leica/Trimble) and setting out techniques.
Competent with AutoCAD and MS Office.
Good communication and organisational skills.
CSCS card required; SSSTS/SMSTS desirable.
