Engineering Design Lead

The in-house design team is central to achieving outstanding results and making a significant impact. This role could also be known as Technical Director, Regional Director or Framework Director.
This role directs a design function undertaking feasibility, outline, and where appropriate, detailed designs for capital solutions that will enable Severn Trent to deliver over £6bn of investments in the next five years. The team will support the development of portfolio strategies for future investments plans and will work with external partners to deliver high-quality, efficient designs within the Capital Delivery works programme.
The role can be based at Shrewsbury, Derby or Coventry and reports directly to the Head of Design. You will lead a team with 6-9 direct reports, approximately 40-70 people directly employed in your team, plus framework services from design houses and consultancies.
Responsibilities
* Direct a design function to deliver feasibility, outline, and detailed designs for capital solutions, enabling delivery of substantial investments.
* Develop and nurture a highly engaged, high-performing design team and collaborate with external partners to deliver innovative, high-quality, efficient designs.
* Contribute to the development of overall portfolio strategies for future investment plans.
* Innovate and drive continuous improvements in design processes and team development.
* Ensure designs align with strategic goals, environmental outcomes, and value for money, and meet programme milestones.
* Ensure compliance with relevant company strategies, policies, procedures, and standards.
* Lead and manage resources to achieve quality, cost, and milestone targets.
* Ensure the team discharges the role of Principal Designer under CDM Regulations and oversee design work by external consultants and construction partners.
* Manage operating costs within authorised budgets and foster industry relationships, researching external best practices.
