Our client now wishes to appoint a Protection & Commissioning Manager to join the team delivering electrical power projects at transmission and distribution voltage levels. This role will be responsible for ensuring all work is delivered to, and complies with, the engineered design, company policies, and industry standards. Providing the final sign-off and approval that the design (including equipment) is safe to operatives and provides the full functionality for over £50 million of construction projects.
This Protection & Commissioning Manager role is based out of our client's Northwest or Northeast offices. A highly attractive permanent salary and full benefits package is on offer for the successful candidate, along with work longevity, security, and continued professional development. The package includes a 10% bonus, a fully expensed and fuelled company vehicle or car allowance.
Managing a team of engineers, the Protection & Commissioning Manager will be responsible for creating testing policies and procedures, and commissioning work through assurance and testing for small to large-scale high voltage infrastructure and grid connections at voltage levels normally between 11kV and 132kV. Projects include feasibility, detailed design, procurement, construction, testing, and commissioning on existing or new substations and associated infrastructure, among other assets.
The Person
* Hold an Electrical Engineering degree, with at least 5 years' experience in a similar role.
* Proven record of managing teams of engineers on complex HV/EHV projects.
* While leading a team, you may also be required to provide hands-on support.
* An excellent understanding of electrical transmission and distribution equipment, including protection and control systems, switchgear, transformers, and circuits.
* Trained and experienced in developing technical procedures and QA documentation.
* An excellent understanding of H&S and engineering technical standards for large projects.
* Experienced at developing QA strategies and implementing process changes as required.
* Hold or be committed (with support) to gaining a professional engineering accreditation.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience in developing and delivering management reports, business presentations, and team briefings.
* Analytical thinker with good numerical skills.
* Hold a valid, full UK driving licence.
The Role
* Accountable for ensuring each project is delivered in compliance with company H&S and technical policies, including creating test policies for building work that meet manufacturers' testing requirements and engineering designs.
* Act as a point of escalation for technical policy and commissioning issues during tendering and project execution.
* Responsible for the technical quality of commissioning on projects valued between £10m and £50m, including producing monthly status reports and analyzing technical trends and risks.
* Operate across the delivery team as a technical lead, responsible for policy.
* Ensure the business maintains policy, commissioning, and testing systems for data, document, and process control, in compliance with ISO standards.
* Provide excellent customer service through clear communication and meeting customer expectations, such as working safely, accepting high-quality work, achieving milestones, and staying within budget.
* Promote the company's reputation through positive attitude, good timekeeping, and professional appearance.
* Stand in for the Engineering Design Manager as required.
* Manage framework contractors, ensuring compliance with processes.
* Maintain and conform to HSE standards, ensuring a safe working environment.
* Develop high-quality supply chain management structures with relevant teams.
Our Client
Our client is responsible for the construction, maintenance, upkeep, renewal, refurbishment, and repair of electricity transmission and distribution networks, assets, and systems. This includes substations, overhead lines, underground cables, and associated equipment such as switchgear and transformers, as well as renewable energy sources (wind, solar, BESS, etc.).
