Systems Engineer (Rail)
We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Systems Engineer (Rail) to join the Consulting Engineering division. The role is based across Manchester, Birmingham, Derby, York, Bristol, Swindon and Cardiff, and we welcome applications from candidates across these regions and elsewhere in the UK.
Role Overview

Key Projects
Amey is a leading provider of railway engineering services. As a Design Partner on major UK rail and highways projects such as Northern Powerhouse Rail, Eastern Routes Partnership, Northwest & Central Framework, Core Valley Lines, Trans‑Pennine Route Upgrade and Cardiff Crossrail, you will work on high‑value frameworks and community‑focused initiatives across the lifecycles of railway solutions.
Responsibilities
* Apply Systems Engineering principles and techniques to support the definition, integration and delivery of complex, multi‑disciplinary rail engineering solutions.
* Support the development of key plans and processes:
o Systems Engineering Management Plans
o Requirements Management Plans
o Systems Integration Plans
* Manage Requirements Management activities:
o Development, elicitation & capture
o Authoring & reviewing
o Traceability analysis & apportionment
o Change control
o Requirements Management System development and administration
* Develop Systems Architecture:
o Context diagrams
o System definition & boundary
o System, work and product breakdowns
* Provide Systems Integration support:
o Migration planning & system phasing strategies
o System phase definitions and diagrams
o Interface identification, management and assurance
o Interface definition documents
o System Integration test planning & support
o Stakeholder management
o Multi‑disciplinary design integration
* Ensure System Assurance:
o Support integration of specialisms – e.g. safety, RAM, Human Factors, EMC, Fire, Cyber security
o Support hazard identification, risk assessments, mitigation definition and assurance case development
o Verification & Validation (V&V) planning and management
o Develop railway system level V&V
o Prepare and contribute to technical reports, studies and programmes of work
o Apply CDM Regulations and Safe by Design principles
o Collaborate within multi‑disciplinary project teams and support knowledge sharing
Qualifications
* Experience applying systems engineering processes within complex rail or major infrastructure environments
* Experience working within multi‑disciplinary engineering teams, with knowledge of one or more railway infrastructure disciplines
* Experience in requirements management and V&V activities on multi‑disciplinary rail projects
* Experience using requirements management tools such as Bentley ComplyPro or IBM DOORS (desirable)
* Understanding of managing interfaces across rail infrastructure, rolling stock, operations and maintenance
* Awareness of key systems engineering standards and systems concepts
* Awareness of key railway legislation, standards and their interaction
* Knowledge of CDM Regulations ROGS and CSM-REA (desirable)
* Progress toward Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status, or equivalent professional development
* Bachelor's or master's degree in an appropriate engineering discipline, or demonstrable equivalent experience
* Strong communication skills and a collaborative, client‑focused approach
