Job Description:
NHS Scotland is committed to encouraging equality and diversity among our workforce and eliminating unlawful discrimination. The aim is for our workforce to be truly representative and for each employee to feel respected and able to give their best. To this end, NHS Scotland welcomes applications from all sections of society.
This post offers an exciting opportunity for ambitious and committed Specialists. The expansion of the existing workforce will allow us to develop new and innovative approaches in the delivery of patient care that meet an increasing demand for our services. We are seeking to appoint motivated and enthusiastic colleagues to work with the team in NHS Ayrshire and Arran. The posts will provide a unique and exciting opportunity to be involved in shaping the future of the service. Situated on the beautiful Clyde Coast, Ayrshire & Arran is a great place to live and work. There is a wealth of beaches, golf courses, bustling market towns, and stunning scenery to explore, yet University Hospital Crosshouse is still within 35 minutes’ drive from the heart of Glasgow.
The successful candidates will be based at University Hospital Crosshouse and will join the existing team in providing a Pan-Ayrshire Gastroenterology service.
The post-holders can expect to see a wide range of clinical presentations with a broad range of specialist services across NHS Ayrshire and Arran. The Service functions as an integrated team, and all members contribute towards the provision of outpatient and inpatient care. The medicine component of the post is designed to eliminate medical boarding and to ensure high-quality, patient-centered care for all inpatients. The Gastroenterology component will involve all aspects of inpatient and outpatient work.
There is an active postgraduate education program in which all doctors are invited and encouraged to participate. Appropriate time, support, and development will be provided to allow the successful individual to flourish and realize their professional and personal ambitions and to shape the future clinical service.
The terms and conditions of service are those determined by the New Consultant Contract (Scotland) 2004. The posts are offered on a 10 programmed activity basis initially (including 2 SPAs), but opportunities may exist for extra programmed activities to be undertaken, subject to service requirements and in accordance with national terms and conditions of service. Applications from individuals who wish to work part-time or on a job-share basis will be considered.
The post-holders will also provide ongoing leadership and training in the expansion of innovative community-facing training posts, offering exciting opportunities for doctors within the GP training program and Clinical Development Fellows to work at the interface between acute, community, and primary care services within a multidisciplinary team.
NHS Ayrshire and Arran have developed a new and supportive development program for new consultants, providing additional management training for those in their first consultant post. There is also a strong focus on staff wellbeing within the Board.
Candidates must be fully registered with a Licence to Practice and on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of the anticipated award of a CCT or CESR at the time of interview. Accreditation in Gastroenterology and the necessary training and expertise to meet the needs of this role in Ayrshire are essential.
For further information or to arrange an informal visit, please contact Professor Ali Taha at 01563 827280 or via email, or Dr. Elaine Spalding, Associate Medical Director, at 01292 614819 or via email.
Application should include a current CV, evidence of registration and CCT date, and contact details for two referees, and must be submitted to [emailprotected] by 14th May 2025 (noon). Please quote Ref No: 214575. Interviews are expected to be held in the week commencing 9th June 2025.
