We are looking to appoint a consultant in stroke rehabilitation within the Neurosciences Department and based at the specialist stroke rehabilitation ward in Chapel Allerton hospital. This is to fill an existing locum post.

The successful candidate would be working alongside our current substantive rehabilitation consultant to manage patients on the 22 bedded purpose-built stroke rehabilitation unit. The job plan would involve some cross site working to Leeds general infirmary and St James university hospital.

The role will involve MDT working and collaboration with our therapy teams at all 3 sites and across the stroke pathway and the successful applicant will join a friendly and pro-active team of stroke physicians consisting of neurology, acute & general medicine and geriatric physicians.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant should possess MRCP (or equivalent) and should be included on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at the time of interview, if currently within a training programme within the UK. In accordance with the consultant appointment regulations, all other categories of doctors must be on the Specialist Register.

Applicants should have established skills in Stroke Medicine and Rehabilitation. A strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and a research interest is desirable.

Consideration will be given to applicants who wish to work full or part time and those wishing to job share.

Job responsibilities

In relation to this post, applications are invited for a substantive post within the regional Centre for Neurosciences for a consultant in Stroke medicine with a special interest in Rehabilitation Medicine or a rehabilitation medicine consultant with a specialist interest in stroke. This is to compliment the growing and dynamic Stroke and Neurology Service the department which consists of 4 Stroke Neurologists and 7 Elderly/General Medicine Stroke Physicians. This post is to fill a current locum position and to work alongside our existing substantive consultant in rehabilitation medicine.

For candidates with AIM/GIM accreditation there will be a requirement to contribute to GIM services In the trust to a maximum of 1.19 programmed activities, The post is for 10 Programmed Activities, however part time applications or job shares will be considered. There is also the option to discuss suitable candidates contributing to the hyperacute stroke on call rota (on a full time 1:10 slot or a half slot job plan specifics for this can be discussed in detail as required.

This post is to support developments in line with the National Stroke Plan and the centralisation of all Acute Stroke Units (ASU) and High Risk Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA) services at Leeds General Infirmary (LGI). The postholder will manage Stroke/Rehabilitation unit patients at Chapel Allerton Hospital (CAH), and potentially at LGI. The post holder will also be responsible for reviewing stroke rehabilitation referrals at St James Hospital and providing spasticity management/complex rehabilitation advice for acute stroke unit and stroke outlier patients.

Person Specification

Experience

Essential

* Must be able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in Stroke and/or Rehabilitation Medicine.
* Specifically, must demonstrate higher training in more complex techniques in stroke medicine.
* Evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.

Training, Research, Teaching & Audit

Essential

* Should have completed a recognised training programme in Stroke Medicine and/or Rehabilitation Medicine.
* Evidence of the ability to carry out medical research.
* Experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.
* Experience of participation in regular clinical audit.

Desirable

* General internal medicine (GIM) accreditation or equivalent recent experience.
* Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff.
* Previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.

Qualifications

Essential

* MB BS or equivalent qualification.
* MRCP or equivalent qualification/demonstration of equivalent experience.
* Hold full GMC Registration with a license to practice.
* YOUR GMC NUMBER MUST BE CLEARLY STATED IN YOUR APPLICATION FORM.
* Eligibility to work in the UK.
* Is up to date and fit to practise safely.

Desirable

* Relevant higher degree.
