Mechanical Maintenance Engineer
Location: Birmingham
Hours: Monday-Friday, shifts between 07:00-19:00 (8am-4pm or 11am-7pm)
About the Role
We're looking for a skilled Mechanical Maintenance Engineer to join a busy facilities engineering team responsible for maintaining a large, complex estate. You'll be delivering planned and reactive mechanical maintenance across a range of buildings, ensuring systems remain safe, compliant, and fully operational.
This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a technically varied environment and enjoys working independently while contributing to a wider engineering team.
Key Responsibilities
* Carry out planned preventative maintenance, testing, and reactive repairs on mechanical systems and plant.
* Diagnose and repair faults on equipment including AHUs, FCUs, boilers, calorifiers, and general plantroom assets.
* Work from technical drawings, specifications, and instructions without supervision.
* Maintain plant rooms, workshops, and working environments to a high standard.
* Record all work accurately using CAFM systems (e.g., Maximo or similar).
* Support the development of safe systems of work and comply with all relevant regulations, including HTMs, Health & Safety legislation, and internal procedures.
* Work safely at height using MEWPs, scaffolding, ladders, and other access equipment (training provided).
* Respond to instructions via radio/PDA and adapt to changing priorities throughout the day.
* Provide technical support to colleagues and contribute to continuous improvement across the engineering team.
* Undertake training to work towards AP/CP responsibilities in areas such as medical gases, pressure systems, water, or ventilation.
What You'll Bring
* City & Guilds (or equivalent) Mechanical Engineering qualifications.
* Completed indentured apprenticeship or equivalent training.
* Strong understanding of mechanical building services systems and plant.
* Experience in a healthcare or PFI environment is beneficial but not essential.
* Ability to work independently, interpret technical information, and solve problems effectively.
* A proactive, open‑minded approach to learning new skills and supporting team performance.
* Strong commitment to safe working practices and compliance.
