Job Description

Job Purpose

This is a fixed term Clinical Lectureship (up to four years, with an additional six-month grace-period after obtaining CCST) based at Glasgow Dental School. The post is designed to support the teaching and research activities within Periodontics at the Dental School, and the postholder will be awarded a National Training Number (NTN) in Periodontics by the Dental Directorate of NHS Education for Scotland.

This post offers a unique opportunity to undertake speciality training while contributing to capacity building for Periodontics within the Dental School. The post integrates clinical training, academic development, and educational delivery. The person specification includes the requirements for appointment into specialty training in Periodontics, and the appointee will participate fully in the specialty clinical training and assessment process, including ARCPs.

Clinical training will be a key component of the Lectureship, supporting the award of a Certificate of Completion of Specialty Training (CCST), whilst also providing opportunities for academic scholarship, teaching and research training in the world class academic environment of the University of Glasgow. During training, the candidate will sit the Fellowship in Periodontics examination of the four Royal Colleges. Additional information can be found here.

Clinical Training:

Main Duties and Responsibilities

To undertake a specialty clinical training programme in Periodontics and engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate to the specialty. Successful completion of clinical training will lead to the recommendation for the award of a CCST in Periodontics.

Undergraduate Teaching:

On average, there are around 90-100 undergraduate BDS students each year. The appointee will be required to prepare and deliver lectures, seminars and participate in examinations. The appointee will also be required to undertake assessment of courses within recommended timescales to provide effective, timely and constructive feedback to students in support of their learning.

Clinical Teaching:

Direct instruction and supervision of students in periodontics and primary dental care within both simulated and clinical environments. The appointee will also participate in assessment of students and foster supportive working relationships with students, responding appropriately to individual learning support needs as required.

Postgraduate Teaching:

Will be required to prepare and deliver lectures, seminars and to participate in examination and assessment. The appointee may also be required to undertake clinical supervision.

Research:

Will be expected to engage and contribute with other research-active academic staff members within the School to assist in the delivery of the research strategy aligned with to the wider MVLS College and the University of Glasgow.

Additional Duties:

Undertake, administrative and academic responsibilities such as committee membership, contribution to working groups, mentoring, and other relevant duties delegated by the Head of the Dental School or the Section Head.

Balance between academic and clinical duties

The post will involve a 50:50 split between clinical and academic activity, ensuring a balanced approach to professional development and contribution across domains.

Essential:

Qualifications and Training

A1. BDS or equivalent dental qualification which is registrable with the General Dental Council.

A2. Fully GDC registered prior to the post’s commencement.

A3. Eligible to work in the UK.

A4. Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies from a UK Dental Foundation Training Programme or equivalent.

A5. Demonstrable Competencies Required At The End Of a UK Dental Core Training Programme Year 2; Evidenced By One Of The Following:


* By post commencement satisfactory RCP outcome or programme completion/certification of UK DCT2/3 post which commenced on or after August 2016.
* National Certificate of Dental Core Equivalence (NCDCE) at the time of application.

A6. Must not hold or be eligible to hold a certificate of completion of specialist training (CCST) in the specialty applied for and/or must not currently be eligible for inclusion in the specialist list in the specialty applied for.

A7. Must not have previously relinquished or been released/removed from a specialty training programme, except under exceptional circumstances.

A8. Must hold a Fellowship in Dental Surgery (FDS) or Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery (MFDS or MFD) of one of the Royal Colleges or equivalent.

Desirable:

B1. Possess a higher degree or be in the process of writing up.

B2. Possess or be willing to undertake a postgraduate certificate in academic practice or similar postgraduate teaching qualification.

Essential:

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

C1. Demonstrable Skills In Written And Spoken English, To Enable Effective Communication To Translate Dental Topics With Patients And Colleagues And Certified By One Of The Following:

* Undergraduate dental training undertaken in English.
* Academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) results showing a score of at least 6.5 in each domain (speaking, listening, reading, writing), with an overall score of at least 7.0, to be achieved in a single sitting and within 24 months of the time of application.
* If none on the above, must provide alternative supporting documentation of language skills.

C2. Demonstrates an understanding of audit/quality improvement/service evaluation/clinical governance with evidence of participation in audit/quality improvement/service evaluation/clinical governance.

C3. Demonstrates an understanding of the principles and relevance of research in evidence-based practice.

C4. Evidence of experience in more than one dental specialty/clinical setting.

C5. Demonstrates a commitment to Periodontics and realistic insight into the specialty and the demands of a career in academic periodontics.

C6. Demonstrates good patient care skills with the ability to prioritise clinical need and the capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement to problems.

C7. Demonstrates appropriate technical and clinical competence with evidence of the development of diagnostic skills and clinical judgement

Desirable:

D1. Experience of undergraduate and/or postgraduate teaching in a restorative discipline.

D2. Experience of research involvement.

D3. Record of publications in refereed journals.

D4. Evidence of poster and/or oral presentations at conferences.

D5. Has worked clinically as a dentist for a minimum of 3 months (WTE) within the previous 2 years.

E8. Capacity for originality and innovation.

F1. Evidence of distinction in career to date e.g., prizes, awards, bursaries.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Clinical Academic scale £48,288 - £71,550 per annum.

The post will carry an additional entitlement depending on on-call responsibilities. This banding payment is paid under a separate arrangement with the NHS for which the University acts as paymaster only.

This post is full time and fixed term for up to up to 4 years.
