Main responsibilities will be those of an Employment Lawyer. This will include giving advice in relation to Employment Law, policy, governance, conducting litigation; and where necessary and appropriate appearing as advocate in Court and at tribunals (including the ET), hearings, and inquiries. Other responsibilities will relate to other work carried out by the Litigation Team, particularly in relation to civil litigation and assisting with clerking education appeals during busy periods.
Responsibilities
1. Attend and advise committees, sub-committees, and other groups and panels of the Council as instructed by the Director of Governance and Legal.
2. Provide legal advice to Members of the Council, Officers, and associated bodies, companies, and organizations as instructed.
3. Implement or secure the implementation of Council decisions related to legal matters as allocated by the Director of Governance and Legal or relevant Operational Manager.
4. Conduct litigation on behalf of the Council, managing proceedings and acting as the Council's advocate before courts, inquiries, hearings, and tribunals, including contested hearings.
5. Negotiate and draft contracts, agreements, instruments of governance, and similar documents.
6. Prepare legal or quasi-legal documents and undertake statutory or administrative tasks required by the Council's Legal Services.
7. Handle disputes and complaints.
8. Stay updated on legal developments and advise the Council accordingly through the Director of Governance and Legal Services.
9. Assist in providing comprehensive legal services to the Council.
10. Support senior staff and assist junior staff on legal issues.
Requirements
* Qualified Solicitor or Barrister with a current practising certificate or equivalent qualification.
* Experience and knowledge of Employment Law or the ability to acquire them quickly.
* Experience of litigation.
* Practical knowledge of public law.
* Effective advocacy skills.
* Excellent written and oral communication skills.
* Strong drafting skills.
* Ability to work effectively as part of a professional team on complex issues.
* Proficient IT skills.
* Willingness and ability to travel to various locations.
