Senior FPGA Design Engineer
Location: Brsitol, Hybrid (4/5 days onsite due to workload classification)
Salary: Up to £75,000 depending on experience, plus bonus and benefits
A major UK defence and technology organisation is expanding its digital hardware team and is seeking a FPGA Design Engineer to help develop complex FPGA‑based platforms for advanced signal processing and embedded systems. This role sits at the heart of safety and security‑critical programmes that directly support UK national defence, giving you the chance to work on real systems, not prototypes.
The role
As a FPGA Design Engineer, you’ll take designs from requirements through architecture, implementation, verification and integration onto embedded platforms. You’ll work closely with systems, RF and software teams to deliver robust FPGA solutions for image/radio processing, core embedded processing and other mission‑critical functions.
What you will be doing as an FPGA Design Engineer
* Defining and implementing complex FPGA architectures in VHDL targeting Xilinx, Intel and similar devices.
* Developing and running testbenches using VHDL and SystemVerilog/UVM to verify complex FPGA implementations.
* Using tools such as QuestaSim and ModelSim to drive simulation, debug and coverage.
* Creating low‑level C code to support FPGA bring‑up, test and integration with embedded processors.
* Producing clear, high‑quality design documentation suitable for safety and security‑critical review environments.
What we are looking for
* Strong track record as an FPGA or digital hardware engineer, with experience across the full FPGA design life cycle.
* Solid VHDL experience and exposure to major FPGA vendors (e.g. Xilinx, Intel/Altera, Microsemi/Microchip).
* Familiarity with modern verification methods such as SystemVerilog/UVM and industry‑standard simulation tools.
* Experience working on high‑reliability, safety‑critical or defence/aerospace systems is highly desirable.
* Good communication skills and the ability to collaborate across multi‑discipline engineering teams.
What’s on offer
* Competitive salary up to £75,000 depending on experience, plus performance‑related bonus.
* Strong pension and comprehensive benefits package.
* Dynamic hybrid working – typically 4–5 days a week on‑site for classified work, with flexibility around hours where possible.
* Career development and training with a growing team working on cutting‑edge FPGA technologies.
Due to the nature of the work, candidates must be British Citizens or dual UK nationals and eligible for UK security clearance.
