Overview of the role
The Pendlebury Centre is a specialist SEMH Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) committed to supporting students with Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs. Guided by our mission: Believe In Your Future, we provide a nurturing, consistent educational environment that promotes emotional wellbeing, academic progress, and personal development.
We work with students from a wide range of backgrounds, many of whom have experienced significant barriers to education. These may include prolonged gaps in learning, disengagement from school, breakdowns in relationships, and common contributors to school refusal including EBSA. Our approach is rooted in ambition, empathy, understanding, and high expectations—ensuring every student feels seen, supported, and empowered.
Responsibilities
We are looking to appoint a Deputy Headteacher from January 2026 to join our highly dedicated Senior Leadership Team at The Pendlebury Centre PRU, including Cedars and Pendlebury Paths in Stockport. We are a Local Authority maintained Pupil Referral Unit supporting secondary aged students. The successful candidate will:
* Work under the direction of the Headteacher to lead a PRU with a national reputation for outstanding provision that maximises student progress, achievement, reintegration into their mainstream school and preparation for adulthood.
* Lead on Teaching, Learning and Assessment at the Centre, and have a specific responsibility for a curriculum area and a teaching commitment.
* Build and develop further effective working relationships with the student’s mainstream school and other agencies which supports the young person’s learning.
* Champion a culture that encourages initiative and accountability and strengthens the quality of leadership at all levels.
* Contribute to the strategy and future developments within the Local Authority for our outward facing Centre, alongside the Governing Body.
Candidate profile / Qualifications
You will be an outstanding and reflective practitioner with a passion for improving the life chances of our young people and their families based within Stockport. You will bring leadership experience gained in a mainstream or Alternative Provision, with an understanding of both mainstream and special education across the secondary age range. You will be able to demonstrate excellent operational management skills with experience in developing the curriculum and evaluating the quality of teaching and learning across the full range of SEND to secure maximum progress for all. You will support us in developing and articulating our vision, values and the ethos both to the school community and our wider community.
