HUC is seeking to appoint an outstanding Director of Nursing and Quality to shape how nursing, quality and governance are led across a growing and diverse portfolio of urgent and primary care services. This is a pivotal new role and a rare chance to build something distinctive at scale within a clinically led social enterprise that serves more than 4.5 million people across the East and South West of England. We provide NHS 111, urgent treatment centres, out of hours care, clinical assessment and dental urgent care, and we work closely with commissioners and system partners to deliver safe, effective and compassionate care. Our clinical workforce is becoming more multi professional and we want a leader who will help us realise the full potential of that breadth for patients and colleagues.
As our most senior nurse, you will set the professional tone for nursing and allied health professionals across HUC and ensure that clinical quality, safety and the patient voice are integral to how we design, deliver and evaluate services. You will lead the development of a clear professional education and career framework, strengthen preceptorship and mentorship, support advanced practice and create the conditions for continuous learning. You will build robust quality assurance and governance arrangements that give our Board and our partners confidence in our standards and that foster a culture of openness, learning and improvement.
You will provide visible leadership for safeguarding, infection prevention and control, incident reporting and clinical audit, with assurance rooted in sound risk management and the principles of the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework. You will ensure that lessons are identified and acted upon, that trends and themes inform improvement, and that our approach to digital triage, virtual care and remote services remains clinically safe and patient centred. You will work closely with the Chief Medical Officer, the Operations Assurance Director and executive colleagues to align professional leadership with operational delivery so that patients experience seamless care.
Your external credibility will be important. You will represent HUC with regulators, commissioners and system leaders and you will help to deepen the trust that underpins long term partnerships. You will be confident engaging in regional and national forums, sharing practice and learning from others, and you will bring constructive challenge that supports innovation and prudent use of resources. You will model our values by being present with teams, listening well, and setting clear expectations that are lived every day.
We are looking for a senior clinical leader with NMC registration and professional authority at the level this post requires. You will bring significant experience from urgent, primary or community based care, a strong grasp of infection prevention and control, and a track record of leading improvement through sound governance and education. You will understand the regulatory landscape and will have led organisations through external assurance, including CQC and Section 11 processes. You will be comfortable with the opportunities and risks of technology enabled care and you will be a persuasive communicator who can build confidence from frontline to Board and across systems.
This role offers real scope for impact and professional growth. You will work at the centre of our executive team, influence strategy and service development, and gain exposure that will suit an aspiring Chief Nurse or Chief Quality Officer. If you share our ambition to provide high quality, fair and sustainable care, and you are ready to build a professional culture that is caring, dynamic, respectful and collaborative, we would be delighted to hear from you.
