Job overview

To be responsible for the provision of highly specialist assessment, treatment and management of children and young people aged 0‑19 who present with a wide variety of conditions, including chronic, complex, behaviours that challenge, disabling and life‑limiting conditions that require adaptations to the home environment.

18 months relevant experience at Band 6 level or equivalent is essential for this post. This is a part‑time role (21.3 hours per week).

To provide assessment and recommendations regarding safety in the home environment, and to work with the Team Leader and Occupational Therapy Service Lead to ensure efficient operation of the paediatric OT service.

To give support, advice, guidance and information to children and young people, their parents/carers and other professionals regarding occupational therapy management.

To work in the community as a lone practitioner in line with the Trust’s lone worker policy.


Main duties of the job

* Demonstrate sound knowledge and skills in the field of housing adaptations.
* Educate and train other healthcare professionals, multi‑agency professionals and OT students in this specialist field.
* Participate in the management of complex paediatric cases within the multidisciplinary team, providing guidance to junior members.
* Provide assessment for and provision of equipment and adaptations for children with complex needs within a community setting.
* Support and advise other practitioners in this area of work.


Details of responsibilities

* Take clinical responsibility for a specific paediatric caseload; assess and review level of need and organise resources efficiently.
* Undertake skilled assessment of needs of children/young people requiring housing adaptations.
* Provide specialist OT advice to professionals such as architects, housing officers and social care colleagues.
* Develop agreed, outcome‑focused treatment plans with child/young person and their parent/carer.
* Discuss prognosis and negotiated person‑centred goals.
* Obtain valid informed consent from appropriate parties considering age, capacity, responsibility.
* Continuously assess and manage clinical risk, including manual handling risks.
* Prescribe and demonstrate specialist moving & handling equipment, provide training and complete risk assessments.
* Prescribe specialist non‑stock items of equipment, demonstrate safe use and complete risk assessments.
* Provide planned specialist advice, teaching and instruction to parents, carers and other health, social and educational professionals.
* Act as a consultant for the paediatric OT service regarding housing adaptations.
* Provide advice for Education, Health & Care Plans and child‑specific advice for Educational Manual Handling Risk Assessment.
* Provide specialist advice and peer support to health, social care and educational colleagues in community settings.
* Collaborate with multi‑agency professionals to develop comprehensive support packages and ensure OT aims included within integrated care plans.
* Delegate tasks to OT assistants and ensure they have required competencies, including safe use of equipment.
* Train OT assistants and students within the department.
* Promote evidence‑based practice and provide up‑to‑date information to the OT team.
* Represent the OT team when requested by supervisors or senior managers.
* Provide clinical support to junior members of the paediatric OT team.


Person specification

Education and Qualification

* Graduate Diploma/Degree in Occupational Therapy
* Member of the HCPC
* Evidence of postgraduate development
* Evidence of leadership

Skills and Ability

* Sound knowledge of current best practice
* Understanding of professional conduct and confidentiality
* Sound understanding of clinical governance requirements
* Experience of research, audit, reflective practice or outcome measures
* Understanding of relevant legislation and policies for children
* Maintenance of a comprehensive portfolio of CPD evidence
* Postgraduate training in relevant clinical areas
* Ability to relate theory to clinical situations
* Clinical planning and organisational skills
* Demonstrable knowledge of paediatric therapy assessment and intervention, including equipment
* Knowledge and practical experience of manual handling skills
* Initiative and ability to work under pressure
* Leadership ability in given situations
* Vehicle ownership/driver’s licence

Experience & Knowledge

* Extensive postgraduate OT experience in relevant settings, including paediatrics
* 18 months relevant experience at Band 6 level or equivalent
* Recent experience in community settings
* Experience supervising junior and support staff
* Experience educating and supporting OT students
* Experience delivering training to colleagues in health/social care and other agencies
* Experience with major adaptations
