Job Summary

Berkshire Healthcare is seeking dedicated general practitioners (GPs) to join our Urgent Care Out of Hours service (WestCall) which provides urgent medical advice and assessment to all patients living in the Berkshire West area when daytime primary care is closed. Operating weekdays between 6:30 pm to 8 am and 24 hours across weekends and bank holidays, our service provides advice and treatment for patients who have called 111 and require urgent primary care. We offer an individually tailored induction programme to settle you into your role followed by ongoing professional support from clinical meetings, case review and peer feedback, all designed to help you become an experienced and skilled out‑of‑hours clinician. As part of our innovative team, you will be provided with all diagnostic equipment required to undertake the role, including access to the latest clinical software and point‑of‑care testing. We provide a driver and a vehicle for your home visits. Primary Care Centre healthcare assistants are at hand to take baseline observations on your patients and assist you in conducting ECG and urine analysis on request. This role is a face‑to‑face clinical role based at our Primary Care Centre at the West Berkshire Community Hospital in Thatcham, Berkshire. The hours we currently have on offer are: alternate Saturdays 18:00‑24:00 and alternate Sundays 13:00‑19:00 and 19:00‑24:00.


Main Duties of the Job

* Provide timely clinical care at our Primary Care Centres based at the West Berkshire Community Hospital.
* Access hospital discharge letters and patient test results which facilitate safe patient care and minimise clinical risk.
* Ensure that where appropriate, the patient is referred for further management with the relevant service, e.g. secondary care specialities, urgent community response and other community services.
* Contribute to the training and development of Clinical and non‑clinical staff, e.g. GP registrars, Trainee Advanced Practitioners, Paramedics.
* Work within local prescribing guidelines (SCAN/Microguide) with the ability to prescribe electronically.


Qualifications – Must Haves

* MRCGP or equivalent.
* Inclusion on NHS England’s Medical Performers list.
* Ability to manage common acute illness presentations in both adults and paediatric patients.
* Maintain up‑to‑date appraisal and revalidation.
* Experience of working in primary care / OOH / Urgent Care.


Essential Education / Qualifications / Training

* To hold a degree in medicine that is recognised by the General Medical Council (GMC).
* GMC registration as a General Practitioner with entry on the GP Performers List.


Desirable

* JCPTGP – Joint Committee on Postgraduate Training for General Practice.
* MRCGP qualification.


Continuous Professional Development – Essential

* Evidence of continuing professional development (appraisal/revalidation).
* Satisfactory appraisal within the last 12 months.


Previous Experience – Essential

* Recent experience of working as a General Practitioner.
* Previous experience in remote management of patients.
