Lead Safety Engineer – Kent

About the job: Kent is looking for a Lead Safety Engineer who will coordinate the production of engineering deliverables and provide progress reporting for a project in accordance with the project plan. Typically, the role involves leading safety engineering on feasibility, concept, FEED, detailed design or EPC projects. You will supervise and check the work of other engineers as delegated by the project engineering manager, and communicate technical/project issues potentially impacting the project to the project engineering manager. The Lead Safety Engineer is typically accountable to the Project Engineering Manager and the corporate reporting line is to the respective Departmental/Group Manager. We operate a hybrid model, with a requirement to be in the Woking office four days a week.


Responsibilities:

* Lead and oversee safety engineering activities across FEED and Detail Design projects.
* Support the preparation of the Process Safety Technical Delivery Report (TDR) and execute tasks within the project execution plan and TDR.
* Identify and resolve discrepancies and divergences from the original proposal/contract.
* Manage project schedule and manpower budget.
* Prepare monthly/weekly progress reports.
* Support the proposal team in the bidding process.
* Ensure compliance with Kent’s ISO-accredited QMS and project-specific procedures, guides and standards.
* Provide expert guidance on process safety, fire safety, and risk management to other engineering disciplines; review and approve deliverables prepared by other Process Safety Engineers; maintain quality of Process Safety deliverables.
* Supervise task delegation to the team and review inter-discipline engineering (IDC) documents.
* Participate in audits and incident investigations as required; ensure HSE policies are followed.
* Ensure design meets all Process Safety requirements and minimizes risk to as low as reasonably practicable; achieve project completion on schedule.
* Provide process safety manhours and schedule inputs to the proposal manager.
* Facilitate and participate in HAZID, HAZOP, SIL studies and other safety workshops; coordinate such studies with external HSE consultants as needed.
* Prepare and review safety studies reports (e.g., FERA, QRA, ESSA, RAM); review 3rd party HSE studies as required.
* Perform safety studies calculations using PHAST, Flaresim, RAM/MAROS, etc., as required.
* Experience in fire protection and engineering design (Fire Water P&IDs, fire protection layouts, safety signage, etc.).
* Coordinate with other Kent offices to manage process safety and loss prevention deliverables.
* Assist in tender bid evaluations and vendor meetings for fire and safety equipment.
* Demonstrate knowledge of UK safety case and COMAH requirements where applicable.
* Maintain personal training and development in consultation with the Process group manager.
* Ensure all project health, safety and environmental policies are complied with.

Knowledge, skills, education and experience:

* Typically, a Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering or post-graduate Process Safety qualification; Chartered status is preferred.
* Experience working for engineering/client organisations in the oil and gas and new energy industries; exposure to consultancy, FEED/detailed design and EPC projects.
* Knowledge of applicable international standards and codes; familiarity with safety and quality procedures and best practices.
* Experience managing Risk Analysis (e.g., QRA, FERA, EERA, ESSA, RAM, Flare/Vent Studies).
* Hands-on experience with process safety software such as PHAST, Flaresim, RAM/MAROS; Human Factors engineering design experience.
* Experience with UK safety case and COMAH requirements.

Communication:

* Excellent command of the English language in both oral and written communication.
