Senior Drainage Engineer

The Opportunity

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Senior Drainage Engineer to join our Consulting Highways team in Bristol. National Highways, formerly Highways England, has named Amey Consulting as a design partner to support the delivery of the largest and most comprehensive renewals programme ever launched. The £3.6bn Scheme Delivery Framework (SDF) enables procurement of design and construction services across the Strategic Road Network for six years.


The Role

As a Senior Drainage Engineer you will play a crucial role in managing the design and delivery of projects on the Highways account. This includes a wide range of mainly small and medium‑sized projects, with some larger projects included. There will be a particular focus on drainage design using Causeway Flow and assistance with developing in‑house drainage team capabilities. Causeway Flow experience is highly preferable.


Responsibilities

* Lead a team to produce technically sound highway engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements.
* Prepare and check designs in accordance with DMRB and other national design codes, calculations, drawings and documentation as part of the production of scheme deliverables that satisfy quality, cost and programme criteria.
* Oversee the work of junior staff and take responsibility for their actions.
* Manage the commercial success of projects within the portfolio, controlling budgets and costs associated with deliverables.
* Liaise with client and supplier representatives at peer level, attend progress meetings, respond to queries, etc.
* Contribute to bid preparation and the general work‑winning function.
* Drive effective health and safety practices within the team.


What You Will Bring

* Developed drainage design experience and expertise within the highways civil engineering field, gained in an engineer role or equivalent.
* Ability to produce technically sound engineering solutions including highways drainage, complying with all relevant technical standards and client requirements, working unsupervised and supervising junior staff.
* Experience in health, safety and welfare management, e.g. Amey’s Integrated Management System and the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations.
* Capability to act as Engineering Design Lead for a larger project under contract terms.
* Very good working knowledge of software and analytical tools, particularly Causeway Flow.
* Good commercial awareness.
* Strong understanding of CDM, risk assessment and hazard communication; proven ability to act as Principal Designer where appropriate.
* Successful completion of the professional review or end‑point assessment, resulting in Incorporated or Chartered status, or an equivalent professional licence.
* Incorporated or Chartered status gained through the relevant professional institution.
