Consultant in gastroenterology

Wolverhampton (West Midlands)
NHS
Consultant
€85,000 a year
Posted: 20 April
Offer description

We are looking to appoint a consultant to support our expanding Gastroenterology service.

The post will deliver a contribution to the endoscopy service (elective and emergency), gastroenterology outpatient services and inpatient gastroenterology. Inpatient Gastroenterology involves managing patients on the dedicated gastroenterology ward (A8), the respective outlier ward, seeing referrals on other wards and providing an in‑reach service to the Emergency department and Acute Medical Unit.

The post-holder will be expected to develop a sub‑specialty interest in Endoscopic Ultrasound in line with the needs of the department and to develop the management of this service.

The post holder will be responsible for running the GI ward on a 1 in 11 rota basis, providing daily ward rounds for 7 days. For the other 10 weeks of the cycle the post holder will deliver 5 clinical, face‑to‑face sessions (e.g. 3 clinics and 2 endoscopy sessions) as well as attending MDTs and supervising middle‑grade trainees. Throughout the 11‑week cycle the post holder will contribute to a 1:13 on‑call rota for out‑of‑hours emergency endoscopy.

Main duties of the job

The appointee will join 16 consultant colleagues and will continue to develop this progressive Gastroenterology service. The current consultant body substantially contributes to national GI & bowel cancer screening policies, endoscopic accreditation and training. RWT is the West Midlands regional endoscopy training centre and was the first centre in the UK to deliver bowel cancer screening. There are active developments in liver disease, regional interventional endoscopy (EMR / HALO / EUS / ERCP, with SpyGlass), IBD, and clinical trials (both commercial and investigator led). The department is well resourced and supported (7 endoscopy rooms are available across 2 sites and 3 consultants are supported to enable them to have national roles in Endoscopy, Research and Training).

It is anticipated that the successful applicant will develop a sub‑speciality interest in hepatobiliary service. Experience in EUS is desirable.
