Role Description
The Estates and Grounds Officer is a full-time hybrid role, primarily based in Kendal with some flexibility to work from home for planning and administrative tasks. The postholder will help manage and maintain council-owned estates, open spaces, parks, and grounds, ensuring they are safe, well-presented, and welcoming for the community. Day-to-day activities may include inspecting sites, coordinating grounds maintenance and minor repairs, liaising with contractors, and supporting environmental and biodiversity initiatives. The role will also involve maintaining accurate records, assisting with budgets and project planning, preparing reports for council meetings, and responding to public enquiries related to estates and grounds. The Estates and Grounds Officer will work closely with colleagues, councillors, partners, and volunteers to support community events and long-term improvement projects.
Qualifications
* Practical experience in estates, facilities, or grounds management, including site inspections, routine maintenance coordination, and contractor supervision.
* Knowledge of health and safety standards, risk assessments, and safe working practices in outdoor and public environments.
* Strong organizational and planning abilities, with experience scheduling work, maintaining records, and supporting small projects or improvement schemes.
* Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage positively with colleagues, councillors, contractors, and members of the public.
* Basic IT proficiency, including use of email, word processing, spreadsheets, and digital tools for reporting and record-keeping.
* Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and adapt to changing priorities across different sites and tasks.
* An interest in environmental stewardship, biodiversity, and high-quality public spaces; experience in horticulture or grounds care is an advantage.
* Relevant vocational qualification or equivalent experience in estates management, horticulture, facilities, or a related field is desirable.
* Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and, when required, occasionally outside standard office hours to support council activities or events.
