The focus of this post is the delivery of high‑quality anaesthesia for major cancer surgery, complex vascular procedures, major trauma, orthopaedics and plastics trauma surgery. Post holders will also participate in teaching, research and clinical governance as part of a teaching hospital trust. Out of hours they will be on call for emergency cover for general surgery, trauma, specialist surgery including vascular procedures, plastics, ENT, stroke thrombectomy and transplantation, depending on their interests and experience.
Responsibilities
* Deliver anaesthetic care for major cancer surgery, complex vascular procedures, major trauma, orthopaedics and plastics trauma surgery.
* Provide emergency cover out of hours for a range of surgical specialties as required.
* Participate in teaching clinical students, training junior doctors and taking part in clinical examinations.
* Contribute to clinical governance: audit, risk management, quality improvement and compliance with external accrediting bodies.
* Fulfil administrative duties associated with patient care and the running of the clinical service.
Qualifications
* Medical degree, FRCA or equivalent.
* CCT in Anaesthesia (or equivalent) or within 6 months of interview.
* Advanced training or fellowship in the sub‑specialist clinical area.
Desirable Criteria
* ALS/ATLS/APLS provider.
* Ability to work independently at consultant level and to lead a clinical team.
* Evidence of decision‑making at consultant level and management of complex clinical problems.
* Advanced training or fellowship, or experience in the sub‑specialist clinical area.
* Completion of additional training in other relevant sub‑specialty.
* Membership of relevant specialist societies or associations.
* Excellent leadership and management skills.
* Effective administrative and time‑management skills.
* Knowledge of the NHS and the role of Clinical Networks.
* Understanding of working in a regional referral centre.
* Significant contribution to teamwork.
* Good written English, high‑level communication and interpersonal skills.
* Experience in formal and informal teaching and training.
* Contribution to clinical governance, risk management and audit activities.
* Support of research activity.
* Leadership and management qualifications.
* Willingness to undertake additional roles at local, regional and national levels.
* Education qualification or diploma in medical education.
* Experience in implementing change.
* Peer‑reviewed publications.
* Full registration and licence to practice.
* To live within 10 miles of the trust (unless negotiated otherwise).
* Full driving licence.
Personal and Professional Development
Post holders will keep fully up‑to‑date with their area of practice and demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust through appraisal. Professional or study leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust in line with prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service to support postgraduate training, CME courses and other development needs.
Management
Post holders will work within the Trust’s management policies and procedures and will make changes to clinical practice or workload only with prior agreement. They will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the running of the clinical service under the direction of the lead clinician and/or directorate chair.
