As a result, alongside several consortium partners, Balfour Beatty has been selected by BP (British Petroleum) to construct a first-of-a-kind fully integrated gas-fired power station with carbon capture and storage. This project is a key driver in making Teesside the UK’s first decarbonised industrial cluster.
Balfour Beatty is seeking an experienced Civils Senior Buyer to contribute to the Net Zero Teesside project, based at our new site in Redcar, Teesside.
What you’ll be doing
As a Senior Buyer, you will be responsible for:
1. Proposing and developing (in conjunction with the Procurement Manager/Head of Procurement) indirect and direct Category/Subcontract strategies, delivering the most economical procurement route for the project.
2. Carrying out procurement processes for complex equipment packages in accordance with NZT procurement & supply chain management strategy, including:
o Preparation of requests for proposals and quotations
o Evaluation and analysis of supplier responses (both quantitative and qualitative)
o Assessing value using techniques like Most Economically Advantageous Tender or Social Value evaluation
o Conducting commercial checks on suppliers and past performance
o Negotiating to shortlist suppliers
o Making shortlist recommendations, highlighting distinguishing factors and rationale
o Final negotiations to enable contract and order preparation, ensuring compliance with NZT procurement governance
3. Providing support and supervision to the procurement team for assigned activities
4. Providing regular reports on procurement and supplier performance
5. Monitoring the supply market to identify new suppliers and products, engaging with suppliers to understand their offerings
6. Staying informed on market developments, demand trends, and risks
7. Delivering high-quality, value-adding procurement services that exceed minimum service expectations
8. Establishing long-term, performance-led relationships with suppliers focusing on value for money, quality, and continuous improvement
Who we’re looking for
The following skills & experience are required:
* Extensive experience in complex procurement within a construction environment
* Experience in developing procurement strategies across categories
* Proven results in exceeding targets
* Problem-solving skills and initiative in identifying improvements and proposing solutions
* Knowledge of procurement ERP and e-tendering systems (e.g., Oracle, Jaggaer)
* Understanding of Subcontract Procurement Process and Supply Chain Management
