Our Trust is one of the largest acute hospital Trusts in England. We are looking for an enthusiastic, highly motivated individual to provide a high‑quality, first‑class service to our users on the Heartlands site.

This post will involve working core hours within the haemoglobinopathy, cell markers and molecular sections. The haemoglobinopathy section is one of the largest in the country, providing services for the NHS Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Screening Programme within a geographical region of high prevalence. The cell markers and molecular haematology section provides services for both the Trust and external users.

The department is equipped with TOSOH HPLC analysers, Sebia capillary electrophoresis, Beckman Coulter Navios flow cytometer and ABI PCR machines.

The ideal candidate must be a HCPC registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist. Applicants must have an IBMS accredited degree and a relevant IBMS Specialist Portfolio. You must have UK laboratory experience as a Biomedical Scientist, with a specialist interest in Haematology, having sound theoretical and practical knowledge. Experience with HPLC, electrophoresis, flow cytometry and molecular techniques is desirable, however full training will be given. Further study, scientific posters and papers, and CPD are strongly encouraged and supported.

Main duties of the job

You will be responsible for performing the technical tasks to meet the needs of the laboratory service for the haemoglobinopathy, cell markers and molecular haematology sections, in line with HCPC standards of proficiency. This includes analysis, technical validation, interpretive decisions and reporting of samples to achieve efficient and effective patient care and resource management.

Due to the nature of the scope of assays performed, you must have a high degree of concentration, dexterity and acuity. You will be expected to work collaboratively within the laboratory and clinical teams. You will be committed to providing a high standard of service to our patients and to partake in the quality programme of the laboratory. You should have an understanding of legislation, regulation and the maintenance of compliance with ISO 15189:2022.
