Band 4

Occupational Therapy Assistant

37.5 hours

We are seeking to recruit a highly motivated Band 4 Occupational Therapy Assistant to work within our South Staffordshire Community Learning Disability Team. We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic, caring, compassionate, dynamic and fully committed to multi-disciplinary working.

We aim to provide high quality, community based, integrated services for adults with learning disabilities. Previous experience of working with people with learning disabilities is essential, preferably as part of a community team. Access to a car is also essential.

The post holder would work as part of a multi-professional team consisting of Occupational Therapists, Psychiatrists, Physiotherapists, Psychologists and Speech and Language Therapists. They would also work collaboratively with mainstream services, statutory and Independent sector services under the supervision of our Band 6 and 7 Occupational Therapists. The post holder will work with people with complex healthcare needs, within their own homes or residential care homes, day services and other community and hospital settings. The ideal candidate will be somebody who is passionate about providing high quality service to people with learning disabilities in community settings and someone who can work creatively to secure good outcomes, embracing the values shared by this friendly and supportive team.


Key Responsibilities

Job Purpose

The post holder will support the delivery of a high-quality, person-centred, and evidence-based Occupational Therapy service within the Community Learning Disabilities Team. Working under the supervision and guidance of a registered Occupational Therapist, the post holder will contribute to the assessment and implementation of individualised occupational therapy interventions to promote independence, well-being, and quality of life for adults with learning disabilities.

The role involves identifying and understanding the occupational barriers that service users face and working collaboratively with them to overcome these challenges. The post holder will work with service users, carers, families, and other professionals to help ensure a holistic and coordinated approach to care.

Key Responsibilities

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

* Delivering delegated Occupational Therapy interventions under the supervision and guidance of a registered Occupational Therapist, in line with agreed care plans.
* Supporting adults with learning disabilities to achieve greater independence and quality of life in areas such as daily living skills, sensory needs, and community engagement.
* Assisting in the assessment of service users’ functional abilities using standardised and non-standardised tools.


Person specification

Qualifications & Training Essential criteria

* Formal qualification relevant to the post e.g. level 3 NVQ/Diploma in Health and Social Care.
* Evidence of practical training or education in a health or social care setting.
* Able to demonstrate a good standard of literacy and numeracy.

Desirable criteria

* Higher apprenticeship level 5/Foundation Degree in related subject/ assistant practitioner qualification or equivalent.


Experience

Essential criteria

* Experience of working in a team in community or health settings.
* Experience of working with children/adults with learning disabilities.

Desirable criteria

* Experience of working with AHP professions.
* Experience of working in the NHS.


Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

Essential criteria

* Understanding of Information Governance, Data Protection, Confidentiality, and Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults.
* An awareness of relevant conditions and their impact on individuals and their carers.
* Have an understanding and knowledge of the role of Occupational Therapy.

Desirable criteria

* Specific knowledge related to working with the occupational needs of adults with learning disabilities and other complex needs.
* Knowledge of dealing with difficult situations.
* Experience of using RiO to document assessment and intervention as part of the service user’s electronic record.
