Business Support Assistant – Fixed Term, Full Time
Location: Basildon. Working Style: Anywhere worker. Closing Date: 17th September 2025. Salary: £25,081 per annum.
Do you have a desire to help and support young people? Are you able to organise and manage your workload, communicate effectively and work as part of a team? This is an exciting opportunity in our South Children’s, Families and Education Service Support Team, where you’ll provide essential administrative support to frontline Social Workers.
Please note this is a fixed term contract/secondment until 31st March 2026. As an ‘Anywhere Worker’ position, the role will involve a combination of remote and office-based working. There is an expectation to attend the office based at Ely House, Basildon, approximately 2-3 days per week, and to attend other Essex County Council offices as required during the fixed term contract.

The successful candidate will be able to use IT systems, communicate with the public and professionals, and adapt to a varied and challenging workload with training provided on internal systems.

Role Responsibilities
* Provide emergency petty cash
* Occasional reception cover at specified centres
* Process inbox requests (e.g., raise purchase orders, TRIPPS, genograms, Passports/Birth Certificates)
* Create purchase orders for workers; order goods and services online
* Deliver high quality, efficient Business Support services within agreed timescales and SLAs
* Represent the Business Support service at local level and handle customer interactions
* Maintain confidential records per ECC guidance
* Manage correspondence in a timely, professional manner
* Share knowledge and highlight efficiency improvements
* Work targets/objectives defined annually within the performance framework
What you will need
* Education: 5 GCSEs (C grade or above) including Maths and English, or minimum 6 months office experience
* Excellent customer service, communication and conflict management skills
* Strong organisational and administrative abilities
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team
* Proficiency with Microsoft Office and internal ECC databases
* Ability to communicate clearly; understanding GDPR requirements for sensitive information
* Openness to new ways of working and change
* Ability to take ownership and check work for accuracy
* Reliability for on-site work (on-site 5 days per week)
