Orthotics at West Midlands Rehabilitation Centre is a regional service, providing a full range of advice and orthotic rehabilitation for all levels of upper and lower limb loss including paediatric services.

The Clinical Lead Orthotist will be a highly specialist clinician, who will work closely with the multidisciplinary team to facilitate the provision of safe, high-quality care for all our patients. They will ensure orthotic prescriptions for adults and children are suitable and cost effective. The Clinical Lead Orthotist will also be expected to support and manage other members of the team.

The post holder will have lead responsibility for a specialist orthotic caseload, working within the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the British Association of Prosthetists and Orthotists (BAPO) professional guidelines and standards for Orthotics.

The Clinical Lead Orthotist, through the utilisation of highly specialist assessment skills and informed patient consent, will endeavour to ensure that the best possible orthotic treatment outcome is achieved for all patients and the patient function fully optimised.

Alongside this, they will need to work with members of the specialist multi-disciplinary team and provide advice to wider West Midlands Rehabilitation Centre services and Community services as required.

The Clinical Lead Orthotist will work with the team to seek and implement service development projects to enhance the quality of lifelong orthotic care available to all patients, across all activity levels, striving for the best patient experience to be achieved at every patient contact

The post holder will manage and lead specific clinical and professional initiatives and service development projects within the service and will liaise with other Orthotics professionals and relevant professional groups.

A strong working relationship will need to be built and maintained with the Service Clinical Manager (SCM), supporting them with Orthotic budgets and other related activities.

Manages stock levels of equipment and supplies.

Allocation of work and day-to-day supervision of team members.

Supervisory responsibility for the Orthotists.

Ensure efficient and effective use of resources to facilitate equitable and appropriate levels of orthotic care within financial resource.

Responsible for ensuring prescription choices are made within best clinical judgment in a cost-effective manner to provide high quality, best value orthotic clinical care, including identification and monitoring of preferred suppliers.

Delivers training on safe use of equipment.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* BSc Honours Degree in Prosthetics/Orthotics or equivalent qualification
* Current registration with the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC)
* Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
* Member of British Association of Prosthetist and Orthotists (BAPO)


Experience

* Extensive experience of Adult and Paediatric Neurorehabilitation, Complex Trauma, Spinal, MSK, Orthopaedics, spasticity management and Community Neuro experience
* Extensive Experience in measuring, fitting, assessing and evaluating the function of a broad range of bespoke and stock orthoses
* Extensive Experience of working both as part of a multidisciplinary team and autonomously
* Significant experience in research and carrying out clinical audits and deliver training and education within the service and external events


Skills and Knowledge

* Evidence of advanced assessment skills with reference to patients with complex disability
* Advanced knowledge of procurement of appropriate best value orthoses using accurate prescriptions based on stock & custom orthotic supply.
* Advanced experience of problem solving related to orthotic products
* Advanced experience of assembling, adjusting and fine-tuning orthotic products utilising appropriate tools and instruments to ensure safe and optimal fit and function
* Ability to demonstrate individual responsibility in respect of Health and Safety
* Ability to carry out risk assessment and applies it to all areas of practice advising others as necessary.
* Advanced verbal and written communication skills for conveying sensitive and complex information to patients, carers, colleagues and other agencies including children and patients with learning difficulties, mental illness or distress
