An opportunity has become available within our Transport Services Department for a Recovery and Workshop Assistant to join our team. Your time will be split between working alongside a small team of motor vehicle technicians in the police vehicle workshop and providing roadside assistance in your geographic area.

You will assist with the general maintenance of police vehicles at stations, along with the recovery of police vehicles that are defective or collision damaged. In this role, you will quite literally be keeping police officers and staff on the road so that they can continue their vital work in the community. You will form part of our small team providing vehicle maintenance and recovery from our Yeovil workshop.

Your customer service skills must be exceptional – you will be the face of Transport Services in all the police stations in your geographic area and an ambassador for Avon and Somerset Police when behind the wheel of your marked fleet support vehicle. You’ll play a critical role maximising vehicle uptime and providing the highest levels of support to frontline officers and staff.  

Main Responsibilities Of The Role

* Apply technical knowledge and skills to effectively maintain and repair all types of fleet vehicles, including cars, commercial vehicles, plant and equipment.
* Working to the highest of standards to ensure officer safety whilst vehicles are driven and tested in the most arduous of conditions.
* Accurately record all labour, parts and consumables on your job card and uploading this to our electronic fleet management systems
* Remain up to date with technical and product developments around vehicle maintenance and on-board systems. We’re proud to maintain a late-model fleet and are innovating nationally with the introduction of electric and hybrid police response vehicles.
* Attend police stations and liaise with customers to effectively determine defects and provide technical support to frontline police officers and staff.
* To recover, deliver and/or repair emergency service vehicles across the Avon and Somerset force area using specialised equipment, loading the immobile vehicle on to the recovery truck in a safe and secure manner in line with your training and undertaking general driving duties. 
* To assist the Motor Vehicle Technicians and other workshop staff as required, completing basic vehicle maintenance under their direction where necessary. 
* Completing daily vehicle checks on your vehicle, along with general cleaning and maintenance of your fleet support vehicle
* Assisting with the housekeeping of the workshop environment (whilst we have a cleaning contract for office and welfare facilities, the Recovery and Workshop Assistant will be required to complete housekeeping duties in the workshop area.
* To accept parts and consumables deliveries, completing paperwork, reconciling invoices and storing items in the workshop storerooms where necessary.
* To liaise with other force workshops and customers within your geographic area regarding the collection and delivery of police vehicles required for servicing
* To make an initial assessment of reported vehicle defects and carry out repairs or replacements where applicable

Skills And Experience Required

We actively encourage people with the right skills and experience gained in different environments to apply for this role, our current Recovery and Workshop Assistants come from all walks of life. To be successful in this role you will need:

* A full current manual driving licence with Category B
* You must be willing to work towards Category D1 / C1 / C+E if you don’t hold this already.  
* A good general knowledge or experience of basic vehicle maintenance tasks, including changing and fitting tyres, replacing bulbs and wipers, basic repair and vehicle cleaning.
* Customer service experience, and evidence of building effective working relationships with colleagues and customers in person and over the phone.
* Excellent computer literacy – having experience in vehicle parts management systems or fleet management systems would be advantageous but not essential.

To be eligible to apply for this role you must have a 3 year ‘checkable history’ in the UK – ideally this means that you would have been resident in the UK for the last 3 years.

Additional Information

Working Hours:

The working hours will be split across a two-week shift pattern:

* Week 1 – Monday to Thursday working 07.00-15.00 and Friday 07.00-14.30
* Week 2 – Monday to Thursday working 11.00-19.00 and Friday 11.30-19.00

Interview Process Timescales

Shortlisting will take place 19th February 2026

In person interviews and assessments will take place week commencing 23rd February 2026.

This role will be based at our Yeovil or Bridgwater workshop. Whilst the Horsey Lane police station is being refurbished, to include the construction of a purpose-built vehicle workshop, the role will be temporarily be based at our interim workshop at Brympton Way in Yeovil.

As this role requires the role holder to obtain driving licence entitlements, you will need to be over 21 years of age at the time of application.

As part of our interview process, you will be required to conduct a short driving assessment with a police driving instructor.
