Job Description
We are seeking a talented Research Assistant/Associate with a background in Interaction Design and/or Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) or related fields (e.g., Computer-Supported Cooperative Work, Participatory Design, Digital Social Innovation, Transition Design). The role involves designing digitally supported participatory processes and collaborative civic engagements, with practical experience in co-designing with diverse stakeholder communities.
The position is based in the School of Computing at Newcastle University, working on the UKRI EPSRC funded project Hydrogen Integration for Accelerated Energy Transition (HI-ACT).
HI-ACT is a multidisciplinary consortium exploring pathways to net-zero, focusing on hydrogen integration, interdependences, risks, and stakeholder needs.
Ideal candidates will have knowledge or interest in Transition Design and designing for ‘just transitions’. They should be passionate about using design and digital technologies to promote inclusive democratic practices and sustainable futures.
You will be part of the Open Lab, a leading HCI research group, working with researchers, academics, and partners to develop and evaluate innovative interaction designs for participatory engagement with energy futures. You will also collaborate with external partners to provide real-world contexts for research.
This full-time, fixed-term position is expected to start mid-October for 20 months, with potential extension. The role involves leading and supporting research activities, including designing digital tools, conducting user research, and disseminating results.
Key Responsibilities
1. Collaborate with the HI-ACT team on user research, interaction design, and evaluation of participatory processes.
2. Design and facilitate stakeholder and community engagement activities.
3. Apply participatory futures and design methods to develop project requirements.
4. Lead co-design activities, digital prototype development, and evaluations.
5. Collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative data from user studies.
6. Contribute to research proposals and dissemination activities.
7. Organize and participate in research and public engagement events.
The Person: Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
* Proven expertise in Interaction Design, Human-Centred Design, Participatory Design, or co-design of interactive technologies.
* Knowledge of Transition Design and designing for just transitions.
* Experience with participatory futures methods and digital democratic innovations.
* Hands-on experience in designing and evaluating civic engagement digital technologies.
* Proficiency with design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, or equivalent.
* Experience working in interdisciplinary environments with excellent communication skills.
* Data analysis skills (qualitative and quantitative).
* Track record of publications at leading venues.
Attributes and Behaviour
* Ability to work independently and prioritize tasks effectively.
* Flexible team player with strong interpersonal skills.
* Willingness to support public engagement activities.
* Positive, proactive attitude.
Desirable
* Project management or team leadership experience.
Qualifications
