About us

Royal Museums Greenwich is a collection of diverse historical sites. The sites are the National Maritime Museum, Cutty Sark, the Royal Observatory, and the Queen’s House. Each of these sites has a unique identity and a common purpose to serve our communities, through sharing our collections and expertise. We are a place to explore the sea, space, art and history, and puts people at the core of its success.

The Role

Working in the Exhibitions and Design department, and reporting to the Head of Exhibitions and Design, the Exhibitions Interpretation Curator will be responsible for supporting the delivery of on-site permanent and semi-permanent galleries, temporary exhibitions, smaller re-displays, digital outcomes and a range of display interventions across the sites of Royal Museums Greenwich.

The postholder will work collaboratively with colleagues from across the museum to research, develop and evaluate displays, taking a lead role in exhibition interpretation using a wide variety of techniques. They will contribute to the development of design briefs and exhibition narratives, ensuring content is intellectually accessible for a broad audience. Liaising with Research Curators, Project Managers, Collections Management, Conservation and Engagement specialists is particularly important, as are the relationships built with external partners and stakeholders. The postholder will also work closely with internal and external designers (3D, Graphic and Digital) throughout exhibition development, ensuring that displays are realized to the highest standards and that communication with our visitors is effective, enjoyable and meaningful. Opportunities for community consultation and co-curation are important to our approach, ensuring the presence of multiple perspectives, the development of under-represented audiences and sustainable approaches for inclusion in the museum.

The post requires an experienced and enthusiastic team player, with strong interpersonal skills, able to think creatively and use their own initiative. The successful candidate will need a good understanding of best practice in museum exhibitions, display and interpretation gained from demonstrable experience of working on the development of major permanent or temporary exhibitions. The role requires an undergraduate degree in a relevant subject and a relevant postgraduate degree in museum studies, or the equivalent in substantial exhibition interpretation experience. The postholder will understand different learning styles and will have an ability to layer information using varying interpretative techniques. Proven communication skills - written and oral - with the ability to simplify and communicate complex subjects to a broad audience, are also essential to this role.

This is a full time, permanent role in Band 4 - Senior Specialists. Core hours of work will be 36 hours per week, working 5 days between the hours of 9am and 5pm. On occasion some flexibility may be required.
