Job Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Registered Nurse to join our team on Ward 33A. Our ward is a busy 28 bedded Burns and Plastic Surgery Ward with 20 en-suite rooms and 2 four-bedded bays, alongside an Adult Burns Clinic run on the ward. North Bristol Trust is the Regional unit for Burns and the major trauma centre for Plastic and reconstructive surgery for the Southwest of England. You will be based at our state-of-the-art £450m Brunel Building at Southmead Hospital.

Main duties of the job


Working Within Our Department – Your Main Duties Will Include

* Work with patients who have undergone emergency or elective reconstructive surgery for trauma-related injuries, cancer, burns and other injuries
* Coordinate and provide complete care to allocated patients as part of a team
* Participate in or carry out dressing changes in wound management
* Work closely with multidisciplinary team members, including Therapists, Psychologists, doctors and specialty nurses
* Support junior team members in their development and actively involve in their own development
* Support patients and families during their stay
* Work in Adult Burns clinic
* Adhere to local and Trust-wide Infection Control policies and procedures

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities

* Organise and deliver high standards of evidence-based nursing care
* Provide planned, direct patient care to a high standard without direct supervision, in line with nursing procedures and policies
* Report significant changes in a patient’s condition to the multidisciplinary team
* Take charge of the ward/department in the absence of the lead
* Lead delivery of care in a defined area
* Contribute to health promotion through education, support and advice; refer to appropriate professionals as required
* Ensure safe ordering, administration and custody of medications per Trust policies
* Delegate and supervise appropriate work in the absence of senior staff
* Coordinate discharge planning with the multidisciplinary team when relevant
* Assess and prepare patients undergoing treatment or investigations as relevant
* Escort patients between wards/departments as required
* Maintain patient confidentiality and respect individual needs
* Coordinate with other disciplines as appropriate
* Act in emergencies and be familiar with emergency procedures including fire and resuscitation
* Provide support and direction to junior staff in emergencies
* Ensure a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, relatives, visitors and colleagues
* Ensure readiness of equipment and nursing supplies with senior ward nurses
* Safely handle valuables and property according to Trust policies
* Report complaints, incidents or accidents and complete documentation as per policy
* Report and document damaged equipment
* Follow Manual Handling regulations and assess patients’ manual handling needs
* Ensure safe storage and disposal of hazardous substances; dispose of sharps and toxic/cytotoxic waste appropriately
* Monitor stock levels and promote efficient use of supplies
* Be aware of ward staffing requirements and undertake ward administration as agreed
* Report sickness to maintain skill mix


Working Conditions/Effort

* Role may require work at any Trust site based on service demands
* Workloads may be unpredictable; walking/standing for much of the shift is common
* Weekend and night work may be required unless otherwise agreed
* Manual handling of loads and patients with appropriate aids
* Handling of commodes, trolleys, beds and furniture
* Contact with blood and bodily fluids
* Potential exposure to distressed or aggressive individuals
* Ability to manage acutely ill and vulnerable patients
* Concentration for documentation and communication; use of computer screens
* Ability to manage multiple tasks and delegate to others as required
* Respond quickly to emergencies or unexpected events


Education/Training/Qualifications

Essential criteria: Registered Nurse with current live registration; evidence of continuing professional development

Desirable criteria: Teaching and assessing qualification or willingness to undertake after 2 years post-registration


Work Experience

Essential criteria: Completion of training for extended ward/department roles (IV drug administration, cannulation, venepuncture, ECGs, male catheterisation, PCA and Epidural training); at least 12 months post-registration experience or qualifying student with acute placements


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Essential criteria: Advanced communication skills (verbal and written); ability to work in a team; basic IT skills; time management and problem solving; ability to organise own workload

Desirable criteria: Completion of relevant clinical skills related to surgical nursing
