Senior Case Adviser (Employee Relations)

We are looking for experienced and confident Senior Case Advisers to join our Employee Relations team. This is a key role providing high-quality, professional HR advice on complex employee relations matters across the Council and schools.
About the Role
As a Senior Case Adviser, you will play a vital role in supporting managers and headteachers to resolve employee relations issues proactively, lawfully and efficiently. You will bring expert knowledge of employment law and HR best practice, ensuring cases are managed effectively while mitigating organisational risk.
You will work closely with senior stakeholders, legal services, trade unions and safeguarding partners, while also mentoring Case Advisers and contributing to service improvement and new HR initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide authoritative HR advice on complex employee relations cases, including disciplinary, grievance, capability and attendance matters
* Act as a trusted professional adviser to senior managers and headteachers, outlining options, risks and legally compliant solutions (including settlement agreements)
* Lead on safeguarding matters as the HR representative, attending multi-agency safeguarding meetings where required
* Support and advise on Employment Tribunal cases and attend hearings as a witness when necessary
* Liaise with Legal Services on complex or contentious employment issues to manage and mitigate organisational risk
* Mentor and support Case Advisers with complex casework and professional development
* Design and deliver HR policy briefings and presentations to managers, headteachers and governors
* Support large-scale restructures, TUPE transfers and academy conversions, including consultation with recognised trade unions
* Advise on a wide range of terms and conditions (including Teachers, Soulbury, NJC and JNC)
* Maintain up-to-date employment law knowledge through continuous professional development
* Build strong, effective working relationships with managers, schools, trade unions and external HR networks
About You
You will be an experienced HR professional with strong employee relations expertise and the confidence to influence at senior level.
Essential requirements:
* CIPD Level 5 qualification in Human Resources (or working towards CIPD Level 7)
* Extensive experience dealing with complex employee relations issues within a diverse workforce
* Detailed knowledge of employment law
* Experience of working in a unionised environment
* Knowledge of local government employment practices
* Excellent communication and organisational skills
* Ability to influence, persuade and build effective working relationships
* Ability to work at pace in a pressurised environment
* Strong IT skills
Desirable:
* CIPD Level 7 Advanced Diploma in Human Resources
