Consultant Anaesthetist

The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to recruit up to 2 Consultant Anaesthetists to provide anaesthesia to patients undergoing primary and complex revision arthroplasty, spinal surgery (degenerative and deformity) and musculoskeletal oncology surgery. An interest in perioperative medicine including pre‑assessment clinic and regional anaesthesia is also required.

Interview Date - 07th July 2026. Subject to Royal College Approval


Main duties of the job

This advertisement is for whole‑time consultant roles (10.5 PAs). This would be made up of 10PA of SPA and DCC and an additional 0.5PA as an on call allowance.

As the non‑resident on‑call commitment equates to 1:8 an additional 5% salary uplift will be added to the weekly clinical job plan. The on‑call commitment covers emergency theatre and the HDU.

These job plans will include 1.5 of core SPA with an up to an extra 1 SPA available on taking on additional roles either within the department or wider hospital. Some examples are that successful applicants could contribute significantly to the current commitment of successfully completing ACSA (Accreditation of Clinical Services in Anaesthesia), become clinical leads or work as educational supervisors or clinical appraisals.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Full registration with the GMC.
* Entry on the specialist register in anaesthesia or CCT expected within six months of interview date.
* FRCA or equivalent.
* Intermediate training or Step 1 ICM training as described by the faculty of intensive care medicine.
* MRCP or other professional or higher qualification.


Special Knowledge, Abilities and Experience

* Significant Experience in anaesthesia for Orthopaedic and Spinal surgery using general and regional techniques.
* Experience in managing anaesthesia for complex orthopaedic oncology, revision arthroplasty and complex spinal surgery.
* Experience in regional anaesthesia.
* Fellowship experience in spines or Regional anaesthesia.
* Regional Anaesthesia Diploma, e.g. ESRA.
* Experience of supervising and leading twin theatre working.
* Clinical experience of cell salvage technique and the use of rapid infusers.


Personal Skills and Qualities

* Able to communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, their families and other Health Care Professionals.
* Able to develop, present and implement coherent ideas for service development and delivery.
* Leadership skills appropriate to participating in and leading a Multi‑Disciplinary Team.
