Safeguarding Specialist Nurse

This is an exciting and challenging opportunity for a highly motivated and enthusiastic nurse with experience in safeguarding children, vulnerable adults, and children in care, with a genuine commitment to promoting their welfare. The successful candidate will have substantial paediatric nursing experience, be educated to degree level, and have evidence of further academic study relevant to safeguarding, children in care, or the public health agenda.
As part of Safeguarding and Statutory Services, you will provide visible leadership, knowledge, and expertise related to safeguarding and children in care for all Trust staff. You will collaborate with multidisciplinary colleagues and external partners such as primary care, Local Authorities, and safeguarding boards.
You must be a registered nurse with safeguarding children experience, knowledge of current legislation, and excellent communication skills. Experience in leading change, influencing practice, and working across organizational boundaries is essential, along with ensuring high-quality information sharing, training, and support.
As a senior team member, you will play a key role in maintaining effective safeguarding systems within the Trust.
Main duties of the job
The Safeguarding Specialist Nurse supports the Safeguarding and Statutory Services Team in fulfilling the Trust's safeguarding responsibilities. You will ensure safe service provision for safeguarding and children in care, providing specialist advice and supervisory support, and promoting reflective practice and self-questioning.
You will identify practices or systems that may risk harm to children, young people, or vulnerable adults, working to reduce these risks and supporting the management of identified risks. You will also deliver and monitor safeguarding training, undertake audits, and act as a contact point for professionals involved in safeguarding.
You will work within a multi-agency team to ensure safeguarding and the potential for children, young people, and adults at risk to reach their full potential.
About us
The Rainbow Centre at Alder Hey provides a hub for safeguarding services, including child protection medical examinations, Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC), initial health assessments, and medical roles for fostering and adoption. The Trust serves a large catchment area, including Liverpool, Knowsley, and Sefton, and offers specialist services like Paediatric Intensive Care. The team collaborates closely with various specialties and partners in managing complex child protection cases.
Job responsibilities
You will support the Senior Safeguarding Team in statutory and safeguarding duties, ensuring high standards of family-centered care, and providing specialist advice and supervision. You will identify risks, deliver training, undertake audits, and act as a liaison for other professionals, ensuring children and vulnerable adults are safeguarded and supported.
You will also provide safeguarding advice on duty rosters, participate in multi-agency meetings, review safeguarding inpatient lists, support complex discharges, and facilitate safeguarding protocols. Additionally, you will contribute to policy development, quality assurance, and external partnership representation.
You will support administrative colleagues, report on safeguarding activities, and serve as a link to specific teams, including community services like Violence Reduction Team and CAMHS, providing supervision and support as needed.

Education & Training
* Current Registered Children's Nurse (RSCN/RN Child)
* Ongoing professional development
* Specialist Community Public Health Nursing BSc/PG Dip (SCPHN)
* Masters Degree or working towards
* Qualification in safeguarding supervision
Experience
* Extensive recent experience working with children and families in health settings
* Experience with safeguarding concerns, high-stress environments, and multi-agency working
* Experience in safeguarding supervision, policy formulation, and training delivery
* Experience with children in care or care leavers, forensic knowledge, and research involvement
Knowledge & Skills
* Expert knowledge of safeguarding policies and legislation
* Excellent communication, negotiation, and leadership skills
* Ability to manage conflict, work co-operatively, and deliver presentations
* Strong report writing, organizational, and IT skills, including data management and electronic health records
* Advanced audit and research skills
