Role Overview
The Cambridge Genomics Laboratory, lead provider for the East Genomic Medicine Service, is seeking a Principal Clinical Scientist (Band 8a) at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The successful candidate will bring extensive expertise in genomic data analysis, interpretation, and clinical report authorisation, and will lead and manage a team of scientists undertaking genetic diagnostic tests in rare disease.
Responsibilities
* Lead and manage a team of scientists performing genetic diagnostic tests in rare disease.
* Analyse and interpret genomic data, authorise and write clinical reports.
* Provide clinical scientific expertise for the suite of disorders and tests offered by the team.
* Train and mentor scientific staff.
* Contribute to the laboratory leadership team, ensuring high‑quality service delivery.
* Deliver a patient‑focused, high‑quality service in close collaboration with clinical colleagues and technical teams.
* Oversee day‑to‑day delivery of the rare disease service area within the Cambridge Genomics Laboratory.
* Support innovation, service development, continuous improvement of genomic testing pathways, technologies and workflows, and implement new methodologies into routine practice.
* Lead quality‑management activities, ensuring compliance with laboratory accreditation standards and regulatory requirements.
* Teach and train staff and other professionals.
Qualifications
* HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist.
* Significant scientific and operational experience in genomics laboratory testing.
* Strong communication, leadership, management and supervisory skills.
* Proven ability to analyse, interpret genomic data and authorise clinical reports.
* Experience in quality‑management, accreditation and regulatory compliance.
* Teaching and training experience is desirable.
