Bachelor's or a masters degree from an accredited Pathologist Assistant program; or a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university and completion of NAACLS-accredited pathologist's assistant program within the last five years; or a Medical degree may substitute for a Bachelors Degree with five years of relevant clinical experience.
Job Description
Prepare, dictate the gross description and dissect human tissue from surgical specimen. These duties will include the understanding and inclusion of pertinent clinical history, description of gross anatomic features, preparation of human tissues for histologic processing and photographing all pertinent specimens and slides. Further, as this field progresses, the use of digital microscopy, remote microscopy and other technologies may need to be incorporated in the day-to-day operations. Discard samples as appropriate.
Perform frozen sections with staining under the direction of pathologist. This will include the freezing of human tissue removed at the time of surgery in preparation of intra-operative examination by a pathologist.
Receive, accession, and correlate paperwork with specimens received. Work and communicate with personnel from submitting accounts as well as courier. Resolves discrepancies working with others in order to expedite cases. Maintain storage of samples and instrumentation used in anatomic pathology sample preparation, such as cassette printers, computer, camera, gross bench, cryostat, and microscope.
Prepare tissue samples for flow cytometry, immunohistochemical (IHC) stains, genetic testing, microbiology culture, and various other laboratory evaluations.
Other duties as assigned, which may include instructing students in the proper techniques of gross handling of surgical pathology specimens.
Expected Salary
Starting salary is between 100k - 140k, commensurate with education and experience.
