This post provides consultant cover to the Paediatric Critical Care Transport service (CoMET). Details of the breakdown between these two areas is described below.
Main duties and responsibilities
* Maintenance of the highest clinical standards in the management of patients referred to CoMET and support for those managing children requiring critical care interventions elsewhere in the hospital and throughout the region
* Take part in multidisciplinary case conferences
* Supervise and train junior medical staff
* Be involved in appraising and assessing juniors
* Teaching, research and administration
* Proactively develop the service
* Actively participate in departmental and Trust matters concerning clinical governance and audit
Job responsibilities
The overriding purpose is to support the provision of highest quality patient care through personal actions and continuous improvement.
* Responsibility for the core consultant activity of day-to-day running and leadership of the clinical activities in the paediatric critical care transport services
* Cover consultant colleagues for absences caused by late night clinical activities or when out on retrieval
* Participate in audit activities in the directorate relevant to critical care transport
* Provide ongoing availability to provide advice or undertake retrievals when on duty for CoMET
* Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff including observance of local employment and human resource policies and procedures
* Maintain continuing professional development (CPD) to support revalidation; annual appraisal and mandatory training as stipulated by the Trust
* Participate in audit and quality improvement activities
* Adhere to service policies and protocols
* Contribute to audit, research initiatives and clinical governance
* Provide mentoring and support to medical and nursing staff

Job responsibilities
* Assume clinical accountability for the transport service during duty hours
* Maintain up-to-date knowledge of equipment, operational policies, and staffing levels/competencies
* Coordinate and facilitate urgent conference calls for patients requiring high-priority transfer
* Provide initial clinical advice and organise discussions between the referring clinician, the designated accepting consultant, and other specialists as needed
* Triage incoming calls to determine the appropriate transport team composition
* Offer clinical guidance to the transport team regarding patient management during transfers
* Personally undertake transfers, particularly when patient acuity requires consultant-level care
* Support training and development of new team members, including supervised transfers
* Be involved in appraising and assessing residents
* Conduct utilisation reviews to ensure effective resource management
* Report incidents in line with a just culture approach to safety
* Contribute to audit and research initiatives
* Adhere to all service policies and protocols
* Participate in the management and continuous improvement of the service
* Actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning clinical governance and audit
* Provide mentoring and support to both medical and nursing staff
Person Specification
Qualifications / Training
* MBBS or equivalent
* Full GMC Registration
* MRCPCH by examination or equivalent higher qualification
* On Specialist Register, or within six months of obtaining CCT in Paediatrics
* Valid BLS Training
* APLS/PALS certified
* Valid NLS training & APPLS/PALS/NLS instructor
* Delivers education and training to the multi-professional high dependency team
Clinical Experience
* Completion of RCPCH Progress Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine Curriculum capabilities in a unit approved for training by the RCPCH PICM ISAC, including a minimum of six months of anaesthetic training or equivalent; or be in a paediatric critical care training programme and be eligible to act up into a consultant post with support of Training Programme Director
* Experience in critical care transport
* Experience in a cardiac surgical PICU
* Undertake basic and advanced intensive care procedures
* Experience of ECMO
* Evidence of clinical or research commitment and a relevant specialty interest
* Evidence of participation in clinical audit/QI projects and understanding of their role in improving medical practice
* Experience and knowledge of critical appraisal of evidence to improve clinical outcomes
* Experience of quality improvement work and audit
* Completion of formal courses in Audit and quality improvement
* Published audit including quality improvement
* Publications in nationally and internationally recognised peer-reviewed journals on subjects relevant to the specialty
Management
* Experience of leading teams and awareness of leadership styles
* Understanding of the wider health agenda and modern NHS
* Knowledge and understanding of clinical governance issues
* Management training on an accredited course
* Awareness of Service Development issues
Personal Skills
* Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate for effective communication with patients and colleagues
* Ability to work under pressure
* Commitment to treating all individuals with dignity and respect
Knowledge and Skills
