JOB DESCRIPTION
VICE PRINCIPAL
The successful candidate will work within the agreed Terms and Conditions of Service for Vice-Principals.
The Vice-Principal will be required to deputise for the Principal when necessary and take an active part in all aspects of school life.
In addition to a full-time teaching commitment and membership of the School Leadership Team, the Vice-Principal’s duties will include:
Leader of Pastoral Care and Welfare
Line Managed by the Principal
In addition to a full-time teaching commitment and membership of the School Leadership Team, the Leader of Pastoral Care and Welfare duties will include:
1. Leading learning through example by high standards of teaching and learning.
2. Assisting the Principal in leading School Development Planning, School Evaluation and Staff Professional Learning, most specifically pertaining to pastoral care.
3. Assisting the Principal as the key lead regarding the holistic development of moral character and the promotion of positive behaviour and uniform.
4. To be a visible presence in the College throughout the day.
5. Ensuring pastoral supports are in place to enable inclusion and holistic pupil progress (linking with Social Services, EA, PSNI, Youth Justice etc. as required).
6. Providing pastoral updates for the BOG via the relevant committee meeting.
7. Managing the counselling list and various providers.
8. To act as the lead on restorative practice.
9. Leading on the assembly rota/themes and modelling high quality delivery. Provide training as required.
10. Leading on staff rotas for supervision.
11. Developing the taught preventative pastoral programme, ensuring quality and consistency in delivery.
12. As Designated Teacher, lead the Safeguarding Team and provide whole staff training.
13. Attending LAC review and case conferences.
14. Completing referrals for behaviour support.
15. Acting as designated drugs officer.
16. Overseeing the policy review cycle.
17. Line managing the Leaders of Key Stage, ensuring high standards across the Key Stages in attendance, punctuality, uniform, manners, attitude to learning, intervention and outcomes.
18. Working strategically to tackle poor attendance.
19. Key link with the EWO.
20. Lead transition and engage in primary school promotional talks.
21. Ensure inspection readiness.
22. Assist the Principal by keeping abreast of DE guidelines and research pertaining to pastoral care.
23. Responsibility for extra-curricular activities and associated risk assessments.
24. Undertaking other duties as the Principal may require.

Leading Learning and Teaching
37. Cultivate enthusiasm for and commitment to the learning process.
38. Lead and manage the development of an effective learning and teaching culture.
39. Lead and manage the self-evaluation process; work with staff and others to analyse a range of data, interpret outcomes and plan for improvement.
40. Ensure effective implementation of the NI Curriculum, share good practice and work with others to challenge and address pupil under-achievement.
Developing the School in the Community
41. Lead and manage the development and promotion of a positive image of the school within the local community and beyond;
42. Develop and maintain strong and effective relationships with parents and the local and wider community;
43. Ensure effective channels of communication are in place between the school and the local and wider community;
44. Listen to, reflect and act on community feedback;
45. Recognise and lead others to ensure that strategic planning takes account of the richness and diversity of the school’s communities and community feedback;
46. Work closely with other relevant statutory and voluntary agencies to enhance the education of all pupils.
Managing the Organisation
47. Prioritise, plan and organise themselves and others;
48. Think creatively to anticipate and solve problems;
49. Make sound decisions based on a range of informed judgments;
50. Establish and maintain appropriate structures and systems;
51. Lead and manage the development and implementation of the School Development Plan;
52. Delegate tasks and monitor their implementation;
53. Manage resources efficiently and effectively: human, physical and financial.
Ensuring Accountability
54. Create and develop a culture in which all Governors and staff recognise that they are accountable for the success of the school;
55. Combine the outcomes of regular self-evaluation, ETI inspection evidence and other external evaluations in order to develop the school;
56. Lead and manage the process of monitoring and evaluating effectively school outcomes, policies and procedures;
57. Work with the leadership team and others to recognise and disseminate effective practice and challenge and address unacceptable performance;
58. Work closely with and provide effective reports to Governors on the school’s progress and development.

The conditions of service for this post will be in accordance with the Regulations of the Department of Education for Northern Ireland.
