IC Resources is working with a Bristol-based RF and microwave specialist, supporting them with the hire of a PA Design Engineer to join our client’s engineering team.
Our client designs and manufactures high-performance microwave amplifier systems for demanding, mission-critical applications across defence, aerospace, research, and test & measurement. The business is highly engineering-led, with a strong reputation for technical quality, low-volume / high-complexity products, and long product lifecycles.
This role is based in Bristol, within a well-equipped facility where RF design, test, and production are tightly integrated.
As a PA Design Engineer, you will take ownership of RF power amplifier design across broadband and narrowband products, covering frequencies from ~20 MHz up to ~20 GHz. The role spans concept, simulation, hands‑on lab validation, and support through to production.
This position is suited to someone who enjoys deep, hands‑on RF design work rather than purely system‑level oversight.
Key responsibilities
* Design, simulate, and optimise RF power amplifiers across a wide frequency range
* Develop linear and non‑linear PA solutions using GaN, GaAs, and LDMOS technologies
* Perform schematic capture and provide layout guidance with RF performance in mind
* Carry out hands‑on laboratory testing, characterisation, and debugging
* Conduct performance measurements using VNAs, spectrum analysers, and load‑pull systems
* Address stability, matching, efficiency, linearity, and thermal performance challenges
* Support prototype build, validation, and product industrialisationCollaborate closely with mechanical, systems, and manufacturing teams
About You
* Proven experience as a PA Design Engineer, RF Design Engineer, or similar role
* Strong background in RF power amplifier design at microwave frequencies
* Hands‑on experience with GaN, GaAs, and/or LDMOS devices
* Confident using RF simulation tools such as ADS, AWR, and electromagnetic solvers (HFSS, CST, or similar)
* Comfortable working end‑to‑end: simulation → bench testing → production support
* Experience with broadband and/or high‑power amplifier systems is highly desirable
Why this opportunity
This PA Design Engineer role offers the chance to work on technically challenging amplifier designs in a business where engineering depth genuinely matters. You’ll have direct impact on real hardware used in critical applications, with strong visibility across the full product lifecycle.
For RF engineers who enjoy hands‑on PA design, tight feedback loops between lab and simulation, and working in a highly specialised Bristol RF ecosystem, this is a compelling opportunity.
