Editor, The Nairnshire Community Newspaper

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated individual to join the team as Editor of The Nairnshire Community Newspaper.

This is a fantastic opportunity to get involved in an important community project and make an impact on the future direction of the newspaper.

Background

The Nairnshire Community Newspaper is published by Nairnshire Community Newspaper SCIO, a charity registered under no. SC053080.

We are a non-profit organisation, any excess funds generated are ploughed back into the Charity. The charity operates completely independently and is not affiliated with any other publisher or organization. Our mission is to create a newspaper “by the community, for the community”, one that keeps the people of Nairn and Nairnshire informed about local news, events and issues that matter to them.

The first issue of The Nairnshire Community Newspaper was published in October 2024. The newspaper is published monthly, and is available in both printed format from local outlets and (from July 2025) via online subscription.

The publication is funded by a combination of newspaper and subscription sales, advertising revenue, grants and donations.

About the charity

Nairnshire Community Newspaper SCIO was formed in January 2024 by a group of individuals who decided to investigate the possibility of a bringing a local newspaper back to Nairnshire, following closure of The Nairnshire Telegraph in December 2020.

Since its inception in 1854, the Nairnshire Telegraph was at the centre of Nairn’s civic, cultural and sporting life and its demise left the community without an effective voice. In addition to representing Nairnshire, it also provided an invaluable historical record, documenting accomplishments and attainments, milestones and significant events.

The group’s aim was to ensure residents continue to be informed of local news, events and developments, to provide a forum for the community to voice opinions and raise concerns, as well as a conduit to showcase events and initiatives to help strengthen the local economy. In essence, a local community newspaper to engage and represent all sections of Nairnshire society and foster a sense of awareness and community cohesion.

The purposes of Nairnshire Community Newspaper SCIO, as set out in its constitution, are to advance citizenship and community development in Nairn and its surrounding area through production of a regular newspaper mainly by volunteers to:

(i) bridge information gaps with timely, accurate, and relevant news and local interest stories; and

(ii) provide schedules of and support to local events;

which will keep residents connected to each other and promote civic engagement.
