About Us
The Royal Standard of England is Britain's oldest free house pub, with over 900 years of history and a reputation built over the past two decades under current ownership. We're more than just a historic destination – we're a fiercely independent, fast-paced pub and restaurant doing up to 450 covers on a Sunday alone. If you want to work in a business where your contribution genuinely matters, you've just found it.
Take the time to look us up: – you'll want to understand who we are before you apply.
The Role: Assistant General Manager
As Assistant General Manager, you'll lead by example on the floor, motivate and develop a team of around 45 staff, and ensure our high standards of service are consistently delivered. This is a hands-on role—you'll be involved in every part of service, from guest interaction to running food, solving issues, and supporting your team at peak times.
This isn't a clipboard-and-laptop kind of job. It's about real hospitality and real leadership.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead a team with confidence, maturity, and energy—especially during busy services.
* Deliver exceptional guest experiences by ensuring our service systems are followed to the letter.
* Upsell at the table and help boost team tips and revenue.
* Master team scheduling and rota planning, resolving issues quickly and fairly.
* Coach part-time and student staff to thrive under pressure and grow in their roles.
* Take ownership of problems, act before issues escalate, and support where needed—from pot wash to front door.
* Monitor costs, margins, and day-to-day operations with a commercial mindset.
What We're Looking For
* Curious & Engaged: You ask why, look deeper, and always want to improve.
* Proactive: You don't wait to be told—you step in and solve problems before they hit the floor.
* Detail-Oriented: You know it's the little things that make service run smoothly.
* Mature & Reliable: You take full ownership of your role, show up on time, and lead by example.
* Understand what Sobriety means
* Team-Focused: You understand this role is about the guest, not your ego or convenience.
You'll Succeed If You Are…
* A preferred non-smoker, experienced in hospitality, and passionate about guest experience.
* Comfortable managing large teams in a fast-paced pub/restaurant environment.
* Willing to lead from the front and coach less experienced staff, especially at weekends.
* Confident under pressure and decisive when it counts.
* A strong communicator who doesn't hide behind the office door.
* In it for the team, not just yourself.
This Role Isn't for You If…
* You struggle with conflict, scheduling, or stepping into different roles as needed.
* You wait for others to fix problems rather than acting.
* You're more focused on finishing early or clock-watching than delivering great service.
* put your self interest above the pub and guests
Requirements
* Own transport or willingness to live-in.
* Hospitality management or FOH leadership experience.
* Passion for people, service, and standards.
* Strong leadership and accountability.
* Ask me for £20 for showing me you have read the job description.
