Join to apply for the Consultant in Acute Medicine role at North Bristol NHS Trust.

Join the largest acute medical consultant team in the South West. This is a full-time role (10 PAs), with flexibility for part-time or job-share arrangements for the right candidate. LTFT applicants welcome. Our AMU includes an Acute Medical Triage area, an Enhance Care Unit, and an embedded short stay function. The team supports timely, safe, and effective care in a busy, high-pressure environment.

With 18 acute medical consultants, the Trust is leading transformational change in service delivery, with patient care and safety at the heart of everything we do. The AMU sees a substantial direct community intake, high-quality NIV/HFNO care, and across-the-ward leadership and teaching opportunities.

We run a mature SDEC providing cross-specialty admission avoidance, seeing on average 40 patients a day. There is a separate Acute Frailty Unit run by the frailty team.


Main duties of the job

* Deliver consultant-led acute medical care for patients presenting to the AMU and SDEC at North Bristol NHS Trust.
* Lead and supervise the acute take, SDEC, enhanced care unit, and AMU; participate in job planning for administration and supporting professional activities.
* Contribute to quality improvement and service development.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

* Lead the diagnosis and clinical management of patients presenting to the AMU and SDEC at Southmead Hospital.
* Provide regular ward rounds and clinical support to patients with the junior medical team; maintain high standards of patient care.
* Collaborate with colleagues across specialties for a multidisciplinary approach.
* Participate in the Acute Medicine rota (early/late shifts, weekend cover 1 in 8 for 1 WTE) and SDEC shifts.
* Support patient flow improvements and admission reductions in line with Trust priorities.
* Engage in teaching, audit, governance, and research within the AMU.
* Provide supervision and mentorship to junior medical staff.


Qualifications And Registration


Essential criteria

* MRCP or equivalent; Full GMC registration.
* CCT in General Internal Medicine / Acute Internal Medicine and on the GMC Specialist Register at appointment.


Desirable criteria

* Higher academic qualification (MD or MS).
* CCT in Acute Internal Medicine.


Training And Experience


Essential criteria

* Experience of UK hospital systems and practices.
* 4 years postgraduate experience including higher surgical/medical training; three years as a Senior Registrar in an approved training post.
* Training in diagnosis and treatment of the full range of acute medical conditions.


Further Training, Management, Audit


Essential criteria

* Recent CME and progression at this career stage.
* Experience in audit projects and documentation.
* Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues and the political context of the Trust.


Desirable criteria

* General management course or programme.


Research, Teaching, Publications


Essential criteria

* Proven teaching ability; willingness to teach medical undergraduates and postgraduates.


Desirable criteria

* Proven track record in research and publications; ability to gain trust of colleagues and patients; evidence of effective teaching.


Leadership and Teamwork


Essential criteria

* Ability to build and maintain effective teams; positive leadership and change management; strong organisational and compassionate leadership skills.


Communication skills


Essential criteria

* Empathetic and clear communication with patients and colleagues; ability to explain complex information; strong written and verbal communication for management reports.


Other


Essential criteria

* Must reside within 30 minutes or ten miles from the principal place of work.
* Must hold appropriate Home Office work/residence status in the UK.
