Surrey Downs Health & Care

To provide a highly effective, comprehensive foot health service for the population of Surrey Downs Health and Care (SDHC).

Principal Duties include:

1. Work as an integral member of the podiatry team to assess need and deliver quality programmes of podiatric care to patients in a variety of settings across the SDHC sites.
2. Participate in a mentored rotational programme of specialist clinics, gaining further knowledge and experience in diabetes (acute and community), nail surgery, biomechanics.
Main duties of the job

The Podiatry team at Surrey Downs Health and Care are seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Band 5 Podiatrist with excellent clinical and communication skills.

You will have knowledge of a broad range of podiatric practice together with a desire to learn and develop further. A willingness to ask and take advice is essential. In turn you will be welcomed as an integral member of a progressive and supportive podiatry team. You will assess need and deliver quality programmes of Podiatric care to patients in a variety of areas including community clinics and domiciliary settings. To enable you to undertake this role you will be mentored and supported throughout with an induction process which includes rotations into specialist clinics including wound care, nail surgery and biomechanics. All staff are encouraged to take part in service transformation, various CPD activities and further study.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To assess, diagnose, develop treatment plans and provide effective podiatric treatments, using a problem solving approach based on clinical need and evidence based practice.

To provide early intervention whenever possible to enable long term gain.

To commit to the philosophy of care with an emphasis on patient empowerment and independence by providing education and information to help patients manage their own foot needs.

To provide services at a wide variety of sites including a patient’s home, clinics, GP practices, community hospitals and in challenging conditions, often working in isolation.

To manage clinical risk within own patient caseload seeking guidance as appropriate.

To obtain informed consent prior to treatment plans commencing.

To ensure all patients are appropriately assessed prior to referring to the assistant grade.

To undertake diagnostic procedures effectively using appropriate equipment e.g. wound swabs, Doppler ultrasound.

To be proficient in comprehensive neurological and vascular assessments, wound debridement, advanced pathology and wound management.

The post holder will be responsible for carrying out a thorough medical assessment to ensure suitability of local anaesthesia and minor surgery.

To undertake specialist surgical intervention for complex nail pathologies.

To undertake basic biomechanical assessments in order to prescribe, manufacture and dispense orthotics or simple insoles.

To manage a domiciliary caseload within a geographical area.

To maintain clear, comprehensive and accurate records.

To participate in specialist clinical rotations, gaining in-depth knowledge and experience in advanced areas of podiatric practice.

To actively participate in clinical support and utilise reflective practice as a method to ensure quality of care for all service users.

To provide advice and guidance to podiatry assistants.

Person specification Qualifications Essential criteria
* BSc/DPodM Podiatry/ Podiatric Medicine
* HCPC Registered Podiatrist
* Car Driver (Full Licence) with access to a car for business use
Desirable criteria
* Member of the College of Podiatry
* CPD portfolio
Experience Essential criteria
* Experience of working in a team
* Knowledge of broad range of podiatric practice.
* Appreciation of good record keeping
Desirable criteria
* Awareness of current NHS trends and policies, including clinical governance and NCF’s
Skills Essential criteria
* Good hand eye co –ordination
* Effective communication
Desirable criteria
* Good presentation skills
* IT Skills

* Ability to carry out physical aspects of the role
* Ability to work under pressure
* Good time management
